The engine has 5,000 miles on it. It is leaking along the case seam, mostly towards the front. I will look closer tomorrow, but it didn't look like oil was above the front of the seam.

I cleaned off the case and ran it for a few minutes...no leak. I shut it off and a few minutes later I saw a drip develop at the surface between the engine and trans. My guess is main seal. Sound like the right prognosis?



What causes this in 5,000? How can I prevent it from happening again?

If the oil is leaking out between the engine case and the transmission it is a good chance the main seal is the culprit. Failure at 5k miles seems odd. Could have been a defective seal or something like that.

I had to replace a flywheel that ad leakage issues a couple of years ago. It had pitting in the flywheel where the seal rides. I tried sanding out the pits, but the deeper I sanded, the bigger the pits got. It was as if they were flaws in the metal of the flywheel. The pits were too deep to sand out and still have enough diameter for the seal to still contact it.

As far as the oil leak....it doesnt seem to be running down the whole seam or is it.....looks to be right there at a pry point.
Any CASE history????

I caught the picture of the drip as it was happening. It continues to flow and spreads down the case. Here is a picture before I wiped it off:


Disregard the RTV on the bolt. That will be repaired this weekend as well.

I had help today from Dirtjunkie. I replaced the main seal, although it still looked good. However there was no o ring for the flywheel, just some material of some sort in the groove. I cleaned that out and put a new o ring in. I tightened all my bolts I could get to, and used degreaser on the engine. I also repaired a oil strainer stud. When I had changed the oil last time, I found one was loose and had something in the threads similar to JB Weld. I had put a 1/4"x20 stud in at the time to hold it, but repaired it properly today by drilling and tapping it for a 8mm to 6mm step stud. Went nice and slow and used grease in the bit and tap. Plugged the large hole where the strainer went with paper towels and my son held a vacuum next to the bit while I drilled (Good advice Dirtjunkie!!!). Used blue locktight on the stud and buttoned everything up. Mounted the original exhaust back on and mounted my new Grabber tires. We'll see if it has a big leak in the morning...

I found some inexpensive foam floar covering at Big Lots that I installed for a headliner. It use to be a sunroof so making something work around the framework required material with a little stiffness. I hope it works out.

I put an alternator on a few months ago on a 1385cc with a Solex 30pict1 and while driving on fwy for 40+ miles, it slightly hesitates or sputters. I take my foot off of the gas and put it back on and it is fine for a while, then does the same thing. It never dies. My tank doesn't have a vent, and my metal filter is under the tank. I noticed my fuel line almost lays on top of my heater box, but doesn't touch (3" body lift). I'm curious where to start?
