you obviously don't know much about cars, so let me break it down for you. the old air-cooled Volkswagens were amazing cars in their day, my family had one years. however, you need to understand that a car like this is 4 decades old. i highly doubt you know anything about repairs, but older cars in general require a bit more attention just to function properly(ESPECIALLY when driven daily). most people that own cars like this usually do all the work themselves, and the repairs/maintenance can cost you a decent bit of money. in my area, there's still a couple specialty shops that fix the air-cooled VW's, but most of the younger mechanics are completely unfamiliar with their overall layout(they're VERY different from most other cars, mechanically speaking). the end result could mean higher labor costs for you, not to mention the cost of aftermarket parts. a number of companies like EMPI and Mid America still make virtually every replacement part you'd ever need, but unfortunately these can cost a bit of money these days.

if you would plan on making this a daily driver, forget it. these cars rust like crazy(especially the floorpans) and it would just be really impractical. plus, would you really want to rely on a car that's 4 decades old every day for work/school? even if it's fully restored, you're still going to have some issues here and there. if you have snow in your area, forget it. although these cars have amazing traction, the sheetmetal is pretty thin and the road salt will eat away at them very quickly. in terms of a safety, they're absolutely horrible. they weigh about 1500lbs(half as much as an average family car), and have no airbags or crumple zones whatsoever.

Rupert, All you say is great info for NY. But in AZ and California we dont have the snow and road salt you so there. The are litterally THOUSANDS of these cars roaming our streets as daily drivers. So much so there are at least 2 dozen air cooled VW specialty shops (mine included) that work on these cars in the phaoenix are alone, and thousands of folks who do it theirselves.

Aside from the good info bugzyla says above Rupert...

Nobody including the original poster said anything in this thread about building a daily driver out of the car discussed in this thread. It is being scrapped out. The VIN has been cut out of it. But aside from the VIN issue, we here on AZBajas can take most ANY beat up old VW and make it into all kinds of outstanding good stuff. We have some very talented folks around these forums.

There are plenty of old VWs in New England and the rest of the rust belt. The sheet metal in a VW is as thick as you'll find on most any brand of car and probably less inclined to rust out than most any other brand of car. They were designed and made in and for a rust belt type area in Europe.

On the subject of crash safety: In 1969 the then new NHTSA did a study of 17,000 actual crashes. 1/2 involving VW Bugs and the other 1/2 involving full size Fords (selected as typical of American made full size sedans). 1,500lbs compared to 4,000lbs. NHTSA report showed no difference in mortality or injury rates between the 2 types of cars. Big, heavy cars plow into things. Smaller lighter cars bounce off. A couple years later, New Years Eve 1971 I personally tested this by rolling my then stock 58 Bug off the side of a mountain road at about 50mph. The worst injury was a small cut between my thumb and back of my right hand from hitting the ignition key when it went upside down. I spent $55 fixing the damage including a new windshield and seal and full body repaint. I finally finished straightening the minor wrinkles out of the roof in 2009. Pics of the car as it was about 9 years after the crash and as it is now are in the gallery here. On a frosty morning about a year after I rolled my Bug, around the corner from my home a Cadillac was slid sideways into a curb at 1/2 the speed of my crash and rolled into the front yard of a home. The roof collapsed to the fender tops and crushed the 2 inside to death. Which car was safer in a similar crash?

And Bugs are still like they have been since the 1950s, inexpensive and easy to fix and maintain.

Oh...BTW...My 58...Is my Daily Driver now. It has over 800,000 miles on it.

Obviously Rupert has no idea who he is talking to. Richard has been daily driving his bug for decades and Bugzylla has more experience with bugs than anybody else I have ever known.

Seems it's probably all long gone Jason. It was in California anyway. The guy's brother thought he was a monster trucker and used it for smashing according to the OP.
