I assembled everythingand it runs!!! My throttle cable is too short now though. I had to put a carb spacer on to clear the alternator. I need to buy an extension or longer cable.

I failed emissions today. My hydrocarbons at idle were thru the roof! 5000! I will change the oil, adjust the valves, swap out my coil for another I have and retard the timing a few degrees. Anything else? Any shops in the valley have a sniffer and can tune a VW carb? Maybe Carroll's in Glendale or Doug's Bugs n Bunnies in Mesa?

Passed emissions with the help of Steve from VW Performance. The camber/toe in the rear needs adjusted as I chewed through a set of tires in 5,000 miles. I think I may sell the front tires and put 215/75r15 tires all the way around because they will fit on the stock wheels a little better.

Just a small update. The toe is being set by a buddy, and I should have it back this week. He had to machine in some slots to provide enough adjustment. Its been gone for 3 weeks, and I'm missing prime driving weather! I ordered a set of door seals and will install them soon. Maybe Santa will bring me another bedliner kit so I can finally finish the paint job!

I just drove it home from my buddy's shop an hour ago. It had a bad toe out and camber issue. He worked on the spring plates and trailing arms because it wouldnt adjust enough. He builds million dollar trophy trucks at FST Motorsports, so this a a little job for him. The bug's toe and camber look great!

He also built brackets to support the sunroof instead of welding it shut. Works great! I will fiberglass the rest shut to seal it up. Once I coat the body again with bedliner, you won't be able to tell it was a leaky sunroof.

I think I'll insulate the roof from the inside and build a headliner and door panels soon as well. Feels great to have my bug back!

I found this on the Samba in the Thing section. I'm thinking of doing this:

Reposted from my local VW forum, 'cause I'm mighty proud of these:

I'm fairly broke, and I have bare metal floors. I've been thinking about making 'duck boards', but that would require tools and money that I don't have right now. At Lowe's they have this rubber floor covering for the garage... about $20 bucks for a 4x4 sheet. I've been eyeballin' this stuff for a while. I made a cardboard template by cutting, and fitting.

Once the cardboard fit good, I laid it on the floor mat, and cut around the edges. I used the flat, smooth edge of the mat to go against the tunnel. I measured and cut out the part for the pedals. I just used a box cutter to cut the mat. I'm surprised I didn't cut myself. I'm good like that.

The passenger side mat ended up being the same shape, but an inch narrower due to the wiring harness and it's cover running down the tunnel. My tunnel has carpet on it, too, which may have taken up a little room.

Awesome fit.

I like this rubber because it has nipples on the bottom (and nipples are my second favorite thing in the world Smile ). Water will not get trapped under this floor mat.

With the extra pieces, I made a liner for the bottom of the nose, where my jack and tools ride. I also made one for the shelf behind the back seats, but I didn't get a pic of that.

So, I have $40 invested in these mats, but they are custom fit, and I like them a lot. They are cheaper and fit better than some other alternatives.

On the test drive, they are absolutely solid and have no movement at all. They don't index with the floor mat 'tits' that VW put on the floor, but they are trapped between the tunnel, the seat and the edge of the pan. I think they look very industrial, too, much like the rest of the car. Me likes. I love the thought of all the nipples and tits under my toes.

The only think I would do different is to continue a strip down the side of the seat from the mat... I had material there that could have run all the way back to my roll bar, if I had thought about it. Oh well, next time.

Anyway, if you need custom, all weather floor mats on the cheep... These are not half bad.

I was out exploring new places today. The avacado did great on the trails. Took this in New River before stopping for a bite to eat.
