Here is my new project,it's a 72 that was supposed to be rust free. As usual I have found lots of rust to repair, "Pans, door pillars, etc". The purchase included the car itself running with a freeway flyer trans and a 2074 stroker motor. I drove it a little while and decided to Baja it up! I have rebuilt the trans swapping the freeway flyer parts for a 4:12 ring and pinion, and some stronger gears with better ratio's. Here are some pics starting at the beginning.

original Mustang eater status

Looked pretty rust free before I ripped it apart!

Test fitting glass parts

Interior as it is

Front glass

Some good parts under the valve covers

Proceeds from the sale of my street rail to make this project happen!

Parts starting to roll in

I think the UPS and Fed Ex drivers know my kids by name!

More to follow Laughing Laughing

Your right the fenders and hood sold the first week they hit Craigslist along with the seats and some other misc parts. Part of this deal was also a 1835 spare engine mounted on a run stand,so I can run the 2074 after freshening it up,before I put it in. I'm going to keep the 1835 for some future project.

Got a little more done today, cut out the rear section.

Found another weeks worth of work to do,the passengers side quarter panel had taken a good hit and the panel had 1/2" thick bondo in it. Ordered a new quarter panel today.

Also decided today to build a roll bar and cage to the rear, to have something to mount the shocks to with the aftermarket trailing arms. Any ideas on how to seal the shocks where they will come through the fender wells?

Look at the front forks on a dirt bike.
Sleeve the hole you cut to mount the shock boot to.
Im boxing in my tower extentions cause im not running a cage.

The shock boots probably wont work with coils.
Anyways...theres an idea...hope it helps.

Found something really cool today from ART racing. they have a split grommet type seal for roll bars the come in 1 5/8" and 1 3/4" they should work perfect. I need to measure the dimension of the top shock housing to find out.

sweet rail bro.. but baja's are great..!! also, i'll be doin rear shocks eventually as well and was planning on making or finding a boot type seal that could seal at the top of the shock and fallow down the shock body (including coils if applicable ) and then seal with a ring of some sort at the wheel well... almost like a shifter boot but larger... i've seen similar things and ideas across the web..

That would have been hard to let go.
But that orange produced the juice for a new creation.

I messed around with the baja hood today and found that the hood didn't fit the body line at the windshield area at all, it was easy to trim up and now follows the body like a glove. Is that a common thing that needs to be done?
The quality of the finish looks like crap too so I think this was probably a low dollar kit. "I am waiting for the day that ANY performance part I buy for a VW simply bolts on without being modified!" Hasn't happened yet!

They never fit right out of the box. They cover so many years and there are subtle changes that the parts are made to cover them all. So it is measure trim measure trim measure again trim. That gives us something to do.
