Hi guys, went offroading the other day and fell in love with it, so I went out on a whim and am thinking about purchasing one of these awesome little bugs. I did a search on craigslist and found one that was nearby and test drove it. Seems to have ran well and checked out to be pretty nice. I was curious as to how the maintenance was on these and how much they really break the bank to drive them in both an offroad scenario and in the dunes. In case your curious this is a link to the bug, and what he said

"Hey! I'm selling my 1970 flat black Baja bug. Just had a ton of work done. It's tuned and runs beautifully! Torsion bars cut and turned, 3,000 miles on a brand new 1776 engine, bus tranny, light bar, mp3 stereo with new speakers and a sub, off road tires and performance shocks, race seats, interior rhino lined, roll cage started, and shifts like a sports car! Way to much to list! I have to many unfinished projects and need to let some go ASAP. Call/ text/ or email me and I'll be happy to Answer any questions."

Preciate the help and hope to meet some fellow bajas Very Happy

in my opinion, it doesn't look like much car for the money. unless there's something special there that i can't see i would expect a lot more for that price. be patient and look around more. there's probably dozens of them near you. keep checking craigslists, thesamba.com and race-dezert.com, good deals pop up all the time.

a baja is not going to be the best vehicle for the dunes, mainly due to the weight. you can make one dune, but it is A LOT of work compared to a buggy. bajas do great in the desert though. they can go places a lot of 4x4 vehicles can't, and IMO are a lot more fun to drive.

maintenance wise, don't expect it to be perfect all the time. you're going to have to do work on it to keep it on the road and running, that's part of what you're getting into when you by a vw. you should have a pretty good grasp of what's going on with the car that you drive, that way you can fix certain things when you're out in the desert and need to make it back home.

i've had my baja for 3+ years and i wouldn't do it any other way. but it does take a lot of time and dedication to keep it on the road. it might also take time to build a reliable baja too, you might not get a perfect car from the start so don't expect to not have to change/fix things as you go. eventually you can get it to the point were it's reliable and then its just basic maintenance.

I actually meant the desert not the dunes, just new to the whole offroad scene . I probably should have mentioned I'm getting the car for 3000$ as well not 5000. Its between that one and these two,

I have to be able to drive it on the street too.

if you want it street legal then i'd stay away from the convertible. no roof would probably suck, and it sounds like too much work to make it street legal. the white one looks like a lot better car than the black one, but i'm not there looking either of them to really compare.

Thanks for the help Very Happy Appreciate it! It's not going to be my daily driver, I drive an S2000 which is a convertible so no roof isn't that big. But I didn't think about that if it started to rain out in the desert, probably not my smartest idea. I'm going to have to take a look at that white one.

Black Baja in HB: If you drive an S2000 like my brother's, you're not likely to think ANY Baja "shifts like a Sports car". "race seats" could be most anything from fiberglass to suspension seats to aluminum short track stock car seats that will beat you to death offroad. "to many unfinished projects" could be scary, or it could indicate a deal is available. 1776 is a nice upgrade on the engine, but no mention of the carb? Does it have a stock 1 barrel carb? What does "roll cage started" mean?

OC HackSaw Convert: A factory built convertible is one thing...A hacksaw convertible is another. The guys says the rack for the rack and pinion steering is welded on...That leads to some questions right there. Disk brakes all around may be good or may be cheapo disk brakes which can't handle offroading. And what's wrong with this Baja that he's interested in trading for another Baja?

The white car is still ball joint beam in front and swing axle rear suspension. Not considered the best package for offroad, but it is quite usable and there are race classes which require this setup that do amazingly well. The Fox shocks up front should have the front of this working as well as most racers in those classes. The cage looks to be well done. It is probably an EMPI bolt-in. Which is fine.

I too feel the white one appears to be the best put together and most ready-to-use of the 3. If you are not expecting to start out doing Metal Mullisha stuff with your new Baja (and you shouldn't!) I'd recommend the white one. Some features on the others are nice, but the cars don't seem to be well done. They may be fine, but I can't see that from the ads.

So I ended up buying the white one! I drove it last night and it seemed to run really sturdy and have some quality parts on it. So I offically am a baja bug owner Very Happy I got a couple of things I personally want to do to it such as HIDS , a light rack, and exhaust cutouts (anyone know his they sound on this car?)

But as for everything else , anyone want to point me in the right direction for where to start on making this thing to an offroad warrior?

Exhaust cutouts?????? It ain't no 53 Chevy! I've seen all sorts of weird and wonderful things done with VWs over the decades, but you HAVE to be the 1st I've ever run across inquiring about Exhaust cutouts. The exhaust in a Baja or any VW is VERY short. A header with the muffler or stinger broken off would be the same and that sounds like caca.

If that's the direction you wanted to go, which is not what your earlier posts gave the impression of, we might have pointed you more at the sawzall convertible.

Well, I plan on doing both offroad, and going in the sand, so I am glad I didn't get the convertible.

And I guess I just want to the exhaust to be louder, mine is decent now, but I have definitely heard better.
