I was able to get some more work done tonight.

I completed the stub axle installation - using early rear brakes (not sure I like having to use the spacer - might look into later wide-5 or type2/thing setup)

Beam visualization

These are all mocked Measurements:

As it sits now, the rear track width, drum to drum with 3x3's and early wide 5 brakes, is sitting at 62" - I have not installed the axles and CV's, nor have I adjusted the toe on the arms. My 15x8 wheels will add 5.5" to each side (outside lip)

Front track width is sitting at 64", drum to drum with +6 custom beam and 2.5x1" arms. Front 15x6 wheels will add 4" to each side (outside lip).

Overall wheel base, if I push the beam 8" will be somewhere around 106" at ride height.

Im to the point now where I really need to start designing the chassis, but I dont think I can do too much without the body - I could possibly mockup the base of the cage/chassis and mock the beam hang, but thats pretty risky without a body for reference.

More to come...

Man its been a while, but I am still working on this project. I have been doing a lot of horse trading, buying and selling parts and acquiring many parts off my list.

I picked up a lot of good parts at Bugtober fest, enough to complete my motor build (1st motor). I decided to go with a simple refresh for my first motor, 1641, new heads, single weber 40. This will be used for the car while I build a bigger motor (the second AS41 I have) - probably just stick to a simple 1915 with dual webers.

I scored a killer deal on wheels and tires today. Got a brand new set of white, wide 5 spoked wheels. 15x8 rear and 15x7 fronts. They have brand new tires, 31x10.5x15's rear and some 235/70/15's up front. Picked these up for $180 for the set.

These should provide a great base to the car - not the exact tire combo I wanted but just couldnt pass up the deal. Now I can sell off my current set of Wide-5 wheels to someone who needs em.

If you use CB unitech rods or Scats version the difference between a 69x94 (1915) and a 78.4x94 (2165) is the difference in crank prices. $289 vs $185. The larger engine works a lot less to get the vehicle moving. If your not using ported heads stick with the 1915.

I ran a 1835 with a Weber cam version of the VZ 15 with a single Dellorto and a 3 rib transaxle in my non caged Baja and it worked fine turning 31 10.50 tires.

What level of case clearance is needed to run a 78.4 crank though? I have always wanted to build a stroker, but having to clearance the case is what scares me off. I like doing everything myself if I can and have usually just paid the local shop to open the case (they dont clearance cases though).

Thanks

For sure, hit me up anytime. This is my first Manx build, but I have built a few Baja's prior to this Smile

BTW, I intend to go full coil-overs in the future, I am building the car for coils, but running torsions and decent shocks for now. As with any project, it starts out pie in the sky, but ends up never getting their, this way I figure I can build a solid foundation have it drivable and usable, then continue to upgrade it over time - but still be able to use it.

I think we can clearance the case ourselves. I plan on doing the same 78mm.
The 78 is doable. 82 needs much more clearance not sure I would try that one at least @ home with out a mill to make it nice. Others please chime in

I am definitely interested. I havent heard of MGF, but do you have a contact number? Do you know if its the widebody/raised body?

I will snag that now if its available.

Thanks

Thanks Toby, but I already talked to Scott (thanks Scott Smile ) Unfortunately it's not a mid-travel body, which I suspected with that price. The mid travel body is wider, taller and a one-piece unit - it retails for $2400. The one he has sitting there is a long-body, but not mid-travel - it wont work for me Sad

Thanks for the heads up though, I was super excited to jump on it!

So I talked with Scott at FRPManx (MGM Plastics) about color selection. I want to run a bright color, but the green/orange/yellow I see everywhere and I want to be different. Thus, PINK!

I tossed the idea to the wifey and she loved it. After talking to Scott, he mentioned that he has only build 1 pink one (Pepto Bismol) and I found a picture of it:

I like it! We are definitely going to go pink with silver cage, black chassis. The only decision left is whether we want to go a little brighter pink, e.g. Hot Pink or just go with the Pepto Pink.

As it looks now, I will be ordering the body late December with the hopes of picking it up early January!

Heck ya, I would be down for that. As December approaches, we will have to touch base on that.

On a side note, if anyone is looking for a manx project, here is a killer deal, just add motor and go!
