Hello all! First off, let me introduce ourselves. My name is Manny and I have a 16 year old son, Joey. We recently came into a 1974 standard Beetle for free, courtesy of a good friend. Now, my background is as a machinist, with no welding or prior fabrication skills. I have worked on my own vehicles before, mostly Chevy Trucks, but nil VW experience.

So this bug we have is straight and mostly rust free, with a body, pan, tranny and engine (which works, so I heard), wheels and suspension. And thats prettty much it! Totally stripped, no fenders, trunk lid, wiring or interior at all. So I look at it as a clean slate and a great father/son bonding project.

So far, we have powerwashed it, sanded the interior pan and patched a few minor hairline cracks and pinholes with QwikSteel. Next, we primered the interior and exterior with flat black rattle cans. After that, we brushed and rolled on two coats of bedliner to the intererior of the pan. We'll probably lay on an extra coat or two inside this weekend and do the underside liberally as well. Only used a quarter gallon so far!

I know this looks grey, but that is flat black primer. It was really bright out!

I forgot to mention, I met Erik and Jeremy at the last Sonic hangout. Thanks guys for the great welcome and ideas! Hope to meet more of you as the weather cools down. BTW, we'll be making the trip to Tuscon for the Bugtoberfest next weekend, Saturday only. Hopefully we can score some seats for this bad boy!

I have a 15 gallon, 12" x 33" Cylindrical Polyethlene Gas Tank I'd like to mount it up front. I know It's a little on the large size but should fit, mounted a little more forward than the usual fitment I've seen. So here's my idea. I would like to beef up the beam with EMPI upper and lower front end supports, then mount a cross bar tying the two upper bars together and providing a spot to weld my tank mounting straps to. Does this sound like a good or bad idea and why?

Edit: After checking it out, we realized its too tall to fit under a standard size hood. Fits perfectly behind the rear seat package area. So thats what we're going with. Just have to fab some mounts to lift it up a bit to clear the outlet valve and make some sort of external fill point. We sure could use some help and/or tips with this! -Manny

We did the dirty deed today and chopped the front end sheet metal! The first cut on the driver side is dead perfect! Joey cut the passenger side and while a little on the cautious side, we can grind it out, and it will work great! Papa still knows best...

Now that we have the front sheet metal removed, I had hoped to bolt on a set of EMPI upper and lower beam supports to my stock BJ beam. However, I don't see how they would attach.

1. The right side of the upper beam has the steering box and a steering stop in the way. Does the stop need to be torched off?

2. Also there isn't a big enough flat spot on the footwell area to mount either of the upper beam support mounting plates. Do these areas need to be hammered flat?

If any of you have any experience with these, some guidance sure would be appreciated. Thanks! -Manny
