Hey guys newbie here I,m hoping you can answer some (alot) of questions for me .. I want to build a baja rat rod combo

1.... donar car has not yet been bought what year is best ? are there models not recommended ?

2...engine I have read a fair bit about different set-ups I would like to build a bigger cc stroked motor any tried and true combos you guys suggest ?

3... I want big shocks (12 inch travel?) is there a breaking point on price vs distance what extra parts a required to do a big lift ?

4... I don,t want to spend a huge amount of cash so I,m looking for bang for the buck shouldn,t be to bad because the build is in the philippines .
What I really need is a parts list for suspension and motor and of course your help avoiding major pit falls .

Ok thanks for any and all help I will post all pictures of the build and prices to show you guys whats involved in doing this in the philippines .

A couple prices to give examples...paint job down to metal color change under 500 US complete redo interior 400 US a whole car in great shape with a rebuilt motor around 1500 US with mags and stereo..

So I am hoping to be done the whole job for 3 to 4k but who knows could be less depending on the donar car and how carried away I will get lol

I've seen a Baja fendered, lowered Bug with wide low profile tires...

I've seen a lowered Bug with Baja body kit and vintage Ford wires wheels and I-beam axle...

But...Your definition of what you want to do is confusing. A "Baja/RatRod" with 12" travel?????????

Try to define it or give us some picture examples or something so we can figure out just what it is you're trying to do.

Ok I have not found a picture of what i want LOL

what I want is the look of a lowered rat bug ,no fenders ,chopped roof ,shaved door handles,no bumpers . but The suspention of a off roader ,big tires and lots of ground clearance for offroad . Also I,m having a lot of problems finding after market parts in the philippines and Importing will take the budget way over what I want to spend because of import duties .

on the other side there are some good fabricators there but with not much experience in offroad bugs . I have been spending tons of time on this site as well as others looking for designs and ideas .

Has anyone built there own trailing arms and shock towers ?
Are there any ideas to do this with stock parts eg: extend the stock stuff to work ?



The Philippines has great offroading from sand beachs to mountains and I have never seen a offroad bug here . I have motorbikes but want to be able to travel deeper into the jungle than the bike will allow (with luggage)

I know some parts I will have to bite the bullet and pay to import like gears reduction from a van or a whole transmission unless you guys have another idea ?

I,m a newbie for sure at a bug build but have built a couple of 4x4s in the past out off chev trucks but a world of difference with VWs .

if I can build one at a reasonable price I will build a bunch and start a adventure sport company in the philippines there are a few that use cheap chinese quads but they suck .

The lack of VW Baja Bugs in the Philippines probably is related to the terrain being primarily jungle. Most people don't realize the amazing capabiities of a VW in such conditions.

Regardless of that, a 4WD Baja would probably be practical there. That's something I've wanted to do for decades. The drivetrain of a VW Vanagon Synchro would be the shortest way to do that. It would require a great deal of engineering and fabrication to do it though.

To blend the Baja and ratrod (Volksrod) looks, use a stock hood on the front instead of a Baja nose. I've been looking for a photo of a member of SoCal Bajas who has that arrangement. It looks good. Haven;t found a pic yet tho.

When I got my VW it had a Baja rear end with a fiberglass street car flip front end. Ugly little beast.

I also generally consider stock front/Baja rear an ugly deal. My next door neighbor has a flat window Super with a Baja rear and stock front. It's ugly. However, if done right, it can look good. Especially if only the hood and front 1/4 is there and no fenders or front apron. Check SoCal Baja and Shop Talk Forums member kbwakesk8's Baja with a stock front hood. It looks quite good. A friend of mine had a Bug body shell with a chopped top that I wanted to build a Baja out of. Someone else got it and built it back into a street Bug.

Yeah no front fenders or apron for sure .. A tube bumper with a couple big powerful lights .. I will look at the other forum at the pics suggested thanks ..
As for the kind of terrain in the Philippines its mountain roads lots of water and mud can be found . Driving in the jungle that would have to be some kind of monster bug for sure . some good sand beach and ocean front driving .

I want to travel up the back roads where its only motorcycle traffic small trails but big enough for a bug its just the roads would kill a normal car or small truck .

So far no luck finding anyone selling parts in the Phils so i may have to bite the bullet and ship them ..

I could have them fabricated there but I would need plans because no one there has any idea a beetle is good for off road ..Ok thanks for the responses back to reading for me

Ok I,m close to getting a starter car and have found a fabricator who will build the suspension and roll cage tube bumpers etc .

So a few more questions for you guys what about a body lift ?

how high can you go ? I want to chop the roof so is the lift the way to go?

How big of a job is it ? Also the bus reduction gear boxes have been searching online for them but very little for sale that I can find is there a new source for them ? Do you guys use them for the bigger tires ?

Chopping the top and lifting the body seems like going 2 directions at once. A friend of mine had a chopped Bug body that I was considering building as a Baja, but I had too many projects going already, so he sold it to someone else.

For the reduction boxes, DEFINITELY use a "No-Hop" setup on it if you go that way. See www.bugzyla.com.

I recommend a VW Bus IRS 002 or 091 gear box with 3x3 arms and Type 2 or Porsche 930 CVs instead of the swingaxle Bus reduction. It will be much stronger and just work better all around. 002 Bus has 4.88 or 5.14 differential ratio which is better than the final ratio with reduction boxes with a 4.37 diff.

yes chopping the top for looks but the body lift for height so its not crammed inside also thx for the tip on the 002 or 091 hope I can find one in the philippines lol Well a little change in plans for now I,m just going to build a class 11 for this trip as time is running short and talk to my fab guy there more when we are together and come up with a parts list for me to ship .

anybody know how high you can go with a body lift ?

Typical body lift is 3". 2-1/2" is also common. I don''t recommend more than 3".
