Hi Folks,

My name is Bob, and I live down in Tucson. I picked up my first buggy (link/king front, Bus rear, 091 trans, 2.0 T4 pancake, 2+2) about 10 months ago now, after drooling over them for 30 years. Well, that turned out to not be such a good frame, as it started falling apart the first day out, and the intake tore, allowing the Bus 2.0 to ingest some sand. Sucked, but oh well. Broke out the tubing bender, notcher, and welder, and now I'm back in business.

My buggy is presently a 2 seater only, and is using the same Bus rear torsion and 091, a new link/king beam (stock width), front disks, and Mazda 12A power. Took it out in the dirt for the first time last week, and it did great! The ride's a little harsh with the KYB gas-a-just shocks, but at least I don't have to worry about bottoming it out, I suppose... Hopefully, we'll get many miles of mild trailing out of it.

I found this site looking for other AZ trail buggy folks and trail information. I know several trails around southeast Tucson, and some of the majors elsewhere, but don't have any real trail buggy experience and would love to learn more about how capable they are. I've done a fair amount of enduro-style motorcycling, 4x4 wheeling, and ATV'ing, though, so I'm not a complete newbie to the dirt.

TTYS,
Bob

Thanks! Yeah, I suppose some pics would be good, eh? Very Happy

We added more bracing, skid plates, and painted it with Herculiner since these were taken (which doesn't work well, by the way), and are in the process of stripping it back down to bare steel to paint it right. Therefore, I don't have any shots of it painted yet. Razz

Cheers,
Bob

Thanks! Did a little more of the to-do list today, so hopefully it'll be back out in the dirt sometime in the next week. I'll snap some shots when I get it out in the open again.

Wow. Took a lot of time, but I got it all together again. Got the rotary working well, and took it out in the dirt. It worked great! The rotary has plenty of torque for a trail buggy. Then, I was driving up Houghton road, and I noticed my temp suddenly went to 240. NOT good. Pulled over, and shut the little dizzy engine down, and it crackled from the heat. Turns out I had a hose clamp break, and the hose popped off, draining all the coolant all over Houghton somewhere.

Fast forward a month, and the spare engine is installed, and seems to work great. Now to put some miles on it to assure everything is ok, and off we'll go to the dirt again! I promise, I'll remember to snap some shots soon...

Those are BFG TA-KOs, in 31x10.5 on 15x8 rims. They work quite nicely for the trails around here, but suck in deep, soft sand...
