hey bugzylla or anyone else that has a imagination and tranny smarts. I was thinkin since the 914 is a mid engine tranny used in the porsche 914. What if you put the 914 tranny right where the stock bug tranny goes? Then use the axles or some axles that would work out to some reduction boxes?

The porsche tranny spins backwards so you would have 5 reverse gears and 1 foward when put in the stock bug location. Now if you put the redux boxes at the end with adapters {somehow?} it would reverse the spinng direction of your output, letting you have foward 5 and reverse 1.

pros

the bus tranny and porsche 914 trannies are about the same price unless rebuilt, then the porsche tranny is more.

the porsche tranny has been known to handle 300+lbs of torque when handled gently and thats with no redux boxes

a 5th gear would make the redux boxes alot more freeway friendly

sounds pretty cool when you say you got a porsche tranny in yer offroad rig Twisted Evil

cons

I am not sure of the trans gearing

adapters adapter adpaters gotta figure something out for the axles

mounting the trans

clutch cable might have to be revamped

anything else you guys can think of or am I missing something??

maybe the northern lights talking so dont get mad at me.

914 Trans Axle will not fit into a VW with out a lot of modification to the VW. It's a Bigger than the Bus Trans axle and has huge ears to mount it in place. Also the shift will be up side down 1st will be were 4th gear is and so on.

This would be in a baja so cutting would be no issue. I just sold a porsche 914 and didn't look much bigger than the bus. the main thing would be making sure the axles were lined up just right then fab from there. the ears could tie into a cage, they are pretty beefy looking. possibly use a strap kit. the gears issue would take some getting used to though, lol.

would the foward and reverse be correct though?

It's longer than the VW trans so the rear Torshion tube will have to be removed and the car converted to coil overs.

The torshion Tube is a Major Structual part of the car evan in a coil over suspension car. Not somthing to remove with out a lot of planing as this is the main ancor point for most every thing in the car.

A 914 is IRS right? I looked at a porsche 5 speed once that was IRS anyway. What I always wanted to do was machine a set of redux boxes and weld them to a set of IRS arms and fab a set of stub axles to make them work. Im just too busy working on other peoples stuff to play with anything like that.

As far as the shifter goes, you can buy a mid engine cable shifter and cure the problem of the gear pattern being backwards.

I have been planning on doing that same thing. I just havnt found any redux boxes cheap enough, to experiment with. when or if you ever get it done let me know I would like to check them out some time.

there was a baja up in seattle on craigs list where the guy made adapters on the outer ends of a bus tranny with irs. so he pretty much had irs axles that went out and adapted to the redux boxes. I dont know what he did about the tranny needing to run backwards.

914 is irs. it would be a one off type of thing, nothin like a production run I could imagine.

I've been trying to find ifo on the IRS Redux combo, because I could have sworn I read that the very early VW Things had both IRS and Redux boxes, using a adapter(For lack of better word).
Though I realise that even If I could proove it true, finding the factory parts would most likely proove to be a quest worthy of a 'B' Movie.
Hmmm here's something from ww2.whidbey.net/jameslux/181.htm
An updated, civilian version of the Kubelwagen with new bodywork was renamed the Type 181 and introduced in the U.S. in the late 1973 as the Thing. Changes included a more modern and complete dash; 40 hp engine; Blah...Blah...blah... Other changes included the deletion of rear hub reduction gears at the end of 1973, and the deletion of the limited slip differential. (That sucks)
Though that doesn't proove it also had IRS.Dangit.

I got lucky with my redux tran,I got the one in my Bug for $25 bucks from a towing outfit.A Bus was getting scrapped out,and I have a spare I picked up for $125.Bucks that has a nut welded to the axle.
Go Figure.
Well tried to find info on the swap.
