hello,
after having my friend talk me into baja'in my bug like his, i started lookin into cost / parts / blah blah... anyway, i have a 1974 standard bug, in 8.5/10 condition inside and out. only 1 nickel size dent on the outside.( at work cant post pics =[ ) but i was talking with him ( he has like 8 bugs ) we agreed to take my body and put it in storage and use one of his old baja's on my 74 pan,. easy stuff, nothing major. just putting it all togeather. so my issue now is, i live at lake tahoe, and my little 45 horse stock motor loses 21% hp at this elevation. ( 10.2 atmospheric pressure) and i need all the hp i can get since we are putting a 6 point cage inside, there for id like to get a small turbo with just enough boost ( 4.5 psi ) to get it up to atmospheric pressue to have it run as it would at sea level. if you have any suggestions / tips please let me know what you think,
also, we do have turning break set up that is going in sooner than later, because i enjoy driving in the snow, and with snow studs and turning brakes i think it would be a nice thing to have since 10% of the people that live hear acctuly know how to drive in the snow, other than that, if you have any suggestions reply,

Welcome to Azbaja. As dfor turbos they do make lots of power but for me it is one more thing that can fall off. Smile Perhaps AZDesertrat87 or JWHRacing will post about thier turbo. Your lucky only .01% of people in Phoenix seem to know how to drive in the rain.

IDFs or Baby Weber ICTs? For a 1600 cc turbo one can use the stock carb.

first off what size motor is it going on? in my opinion since you have to pull the motor apart to lower the compression, might as well put bigger cylinders and pistons in.

is the motor full flowed? you're gonna need extra oil to keep the turbo lubed. also, what do you have for cooling? i know its not as hot in tahoe as it is here in the valley, but a turbo will add heat to the motor. i run the stock cooler, and an external cooler on a thermostat.

keep it simple, run a single carb. i'm running a 550 cfm 2 barrel holley, its a little big for the motor, i need a 350 cfm but the 550 was free, tuned down though and jetted the car runs like a champ.

run a small turbo. you want 4.5 psi, a stock turbo from a subaru ej20 motor is perfect. on my car the stock wastegate limits boost to 5psi, and my motor makes that 5 easily. almost no turbo lag. if i step on the gas, the boost comes on.

i drive my car daily and it's still reliable. if its done right and not slapped together, you should have a powerful enough car. i can run my car from here up to areas of higher elevation, and run up all the hills to get there, at 75+ mph no problem. I've had my car at the cinders in flagstaff (5000-8000ft elevation) and ran the car with no paddles and been able to go everywhere.

my suggestion to you is go 1915 (94mm pistons). 1835s have thinner cylinder walls which takes a way from cooling. they're almost the same cost, so might as well go big if you're gonna do it. you'll enjoy the turbo though. they're a lot of fun and and enough to get ya into trouble Smile

The mis-info rumors about 92mm cylinders need to cease. That info on 92 cylinders having thin cylinder walls is old (Late 60s/early 70s). 90.5 and 92 cylinders were originally from the same castings so there was a difference in wall thickness then. Since about 1971-72, the only place they are thinner than 90.5s is at the head and at the case where they are 3/4mm thinner. Not in the cooling fin area. 94s often cause trouble with the bore in the case getting into the case saver thread inserts for the cylinder studs which is a much greater problem than the old rumors of thin walls in 92s. This is a current problem. If the base of the 94 cylinders are turned down to the same diameter as 90.5 or 92 cylinders and the case bored accordingly, this problem is lessened. Just last year I saw an engine being built by a local shop into a 1915 with 94mm cylinders which had trouble with the cylinder walls forcing the studs to splay outward so they would not fit through the holes in the heads. They were talking at the time about how to cut the stud reliefs in the sides of the barrels to let the studs fit into the heads. I've run 92s since 1974 with no cooling problems. (I even still have those 1974 vintage 92s with the only problem being a cracked Dykes ring some fool engine builder replaced my Total Seals with and didn't tell me about 'til later...barrels and pistons are fine except I can't find the right Dykes rings he cut the pistons for)
