Man... that's kind of an open question. It would say there are a lot of variables involved in that.

- My baja, with 002 close ratio, 33" tires, 2187cc, FK8, custom-ported 044 heads with 42x37.5 valves, dual 44 IDF's gets about 12. If I baby it around town and go easy on the pedal, it gets about 12. If I run it all day hard with the pedal to the floor in the dirt, it gets about 12. I don't know how that works, but it does.

- My 1835cc Westy, dual Kaddies (modified), really hot hand-ported 041 heads, C35 cam, 1.25 rockers got 16.9 over a period of 500 miles before I put an SVDA distributor in it. It'll do even better now, but I haven't measured it lately. It's got plenty of poop, and will actually lift the front wheels off the ground if I drop the clutch.

- The Baja Squared gets over 20 with a basic 1641, stock everything except a little head work and dual ICT's (the devil's carbs, btw, but they fit on a Type 3). It's got a 002 in it and 30" tires, so with different gearing, it would do even better.

My little 1385cc with 4.37 gearing, full steel body, 3" body lift and 3" suspension lift, 30 pict 1 carb and original style muffler gets about 23-25 mpg with the 225/70r15 General Grabber Tires during in city driving.

Let's all slow down here. First: motor size and carb. Second: tire size and type of wheel ( steel vs aluminum). Third: intended use (mostly street, street and minor off road, street and major offroad).

What we have won't help you until we know exactly what your plans are.

Did you read my first post? Pretty much says what it says. I havent had a bug for 30 years, I have no idea what they get for mileage. with a little info i'm fully capable of discerning the info. Thank you. And BTW I don't have any plans yet. hmm maybe i can use some of the info to decide on the path.

We all know how big tires can effect mileage, so with that said let's assume the following:
Steel bodied Baja with some fiberglass
31-10.50-15 & 7.00-15 tires on steel wheels
1776 with a single 44
002 trans (geared for 31" tires)

You might get 20. This does depend a lot on how you gear your tranny. Street vs off road gearing.

Body configuration has a great deal to do with fuel mileage in a Baja Bug. A full body sedan like a Class 11 style car with 225 tires will get much better fuel economy than a similar car with a bugeye Baja body kit with the same tires and unmodified front fenders.

I get about 16 to 18 mpg on the highway. My 360 V8 Drag car would get 18 to 20 MPG.

The Baja has 4.37 with a .82 4th. so on the highway it is running around 3000 rpm. (31x12.4 rear tires) not good for MPG. But on the other hand if I just drive the car around down, 2 and from work and stay below 55mph. I get plenty of hours per gallon of run time. I'm not working the motor and it does real nice in stop and go. I also have a 1 piece hood and Roof Rack with a spare tire. This works like a big Air Dam at highway speeds, so that also eats up the MPG

I have a nasty turbo 2332 with the lowest gearing you can put in an 002 with 31" tires. Top speed is about 60mph at 3k rpm in 4th....... Don't ask. Seriously though I think I'm between 10 and 12.
