I looked at this one last night. I forgot to take pictures but here's the ad.

www.ksl.com/?nid=678&a...cat=&lpid=

He told me the guy he got it from took the engine out to do the clutch but just never finished. Doesn't have a back seat, the battery box is rusted through but overall its solid. The guy said he'll take $500. So with me not knowing much about bugs. Is this a decent deal?

For $500 you can almost not go wrong. When I buy a bug, I just plan on buying an engine for it and factor that into the cost. It usually ends up needing an engine, and if it doesn't, I'm bucks ahead of the game. It's a '68, which is about the worst year you can buy for a baja bug (ball joint/swing axle... the worst of both worlds), so it's not my cup of tea. However, for a street car, it would be a pretty good thing. The battery tray is not hard to fix (I did one in about an hour the other day). It's hard to see from the itsy-bitsy photo, but I'd buy it for $500 if you're looking for a car in that kind of shape.

Hope that helps!

It does help. Thank you. I was looking at it with the intent of making it a baja. But I really likes the look of it with the stock fenders. This guy has a really nice 65 street bug. Makes me want to go that route. But this weekend I'm going to go look at a 57 and 63 baja. So then I'll really decide.

Think I found a better option. See:

www.ksl.com/index.php?..._high=2000

The 68's engine was only a single port 1500

That, to me, looks like a better candidate for a baja than a bj/swing. If it's got a Type 3 FI engine that runs that comes with it, it can also be converted easily to upright, and you could sell the single-port to finance some upgrades.

Still....

Plan on buying an engine if you ever buy a VW. At least you'd have a couple cores or options that way!

X2 especially if the extra parts are in working condition.
The T-3 tin is often sought after by trike builder.

I looked at that 70 last night. Its in decent shape. Has a bit of surface rust. And dents all down the drivers side. It needs a windshield. Needs some brake work, hardly any brakes at all, and it seems to run rich. But has plenty of power. Tranny feels tight. Clutch feels good. Guy said he'd take $1000 for just the car. Turned me off at first but then it occurred to me. It only has 68,000 miles on it. Think I'll offer him $1000 for the car and the extra engines see what he says.
