Is this a reliable motor for a Baja? How about in general? I know I need a bus tranny, but will my stock tranny hold up until I can afford one? I have a chance at an engine, all systems, and a spare parts motor in a box for around 1500. It has the Kennedy adapter and clutch too.

Is it worth it?

Probably cheaper to go with a GM ecotec. They are everywhere for $300 - $500 each. They make 140 HP stock and the adapters are $425 from kennedy.

i have had 5 rx7s in the past:
12a's with street port and brigde port
13b's n/a
and now in garage- building a turbo intercooler draft through bridgeport 12a.

It could be made not so expensive if you take the time to collect all the parts via @bay, but the biggest trick is to mate it to good transmission.

Those engines have a hi-rpm momentum anywhere from 120hp and up. VW trans are low rpm momentum with 40-50 hp.

get ready for medeola trans of some custom gears box, because your gears wont go in smoothly due to hi-rpm anatomy of the motor not to mention H/P difference. rotary gears can be shifted at up to 8-1000 rpm's and it goes even higher for peripheral ported blocks.
#2 you will have to (trust me) open the motor to replace water seals for block and rotor at least, not to mention checking apex, Kits run anywhere 600-1200dollars, but modern seals are far better than original (composites). Any king of imbalance of injection onto particular rotor will blow it so adjustment on carb or injection is crucial.
ill stick with my 1st gen body for 12a:)
plenty of stronger trans options (turbo II or even celica supra 3 speed).
as far ecu microtec is cheap and preferable for rotary. holley is also used a lot, but microtech for autocross (i guess offroad)
i hope it helps not complicate you question. good luck
