Trying to build a baja out of a VW Thing (Street Legal), but curious as to places I can find offroad parts for them. I'm in Atlanta and don't know a lot of places around here that do that type of thing.
Any advice is greatly appreciated, Thanks.

You may want to consider restoring it instead...Things were only around for two years, and they are getting a bit rare as time and traffic incidents take their toll...

Hacking up a late 60's Bug that's on Death's door and one step out of the recycler's yard is a better idea for a Baja, with more parts and such available.

Let's just say if it was mine, I would be everywhere on the interwebz getting it back to bone stock...

Hey dave, thanks a lot for the advice. I hadn't really thought much of that, but it makes a lot of sense. I'll probably just keep it and look for a beetle somewhere.

I have a '68 with an almost nonexistent floorpan but fairly good body and a 1600 SP (unknown condition), a '69 pan with good floors I recently had welded in, and a '73 Super Beetle with a wrecked front end but good 1600 DP...

SO...

'68 with '69 pan and '73 1600 DP Baja, rear suspension components of the '73 plus the transaxle until I set a 002 with a Gene Berg intermediate, maybe keep or dump the balljoint for king and link...

Basically dump all the cars into a giant blender and hit "blend"...

I paid $50 for the '68, $100 for the '69 pan, and the '73 was a daily driver for a few years...

And I'll sell the extras off, such as the '68 swingaxle, which is the toughest one made before the IRS came around, put the old heads of the DP on the SP and use it for a VolksAir compressor when the engine gets upgraded, and sell the fenders and such off to those needing them for restorations of their cars...

I actually envy you...I love the Thing, but its always been out of my reach...its a wonderful camping and beach runner, and that convertible top just adds to the fun. Friend of mine owned one, bright yellow, and it was a riot...

You could always do small mods to a thing that could (if you wanted to restore it some day) be put back to stock. Body lift, off road tires, roll cage, and a bit more engine behind it and a Thing would be very capable off road!

A fully restored Thing can be worth as much as $18,000.00 USD...

www.thingsforthething....cles/test/

Why take a chance on rolling that?

Stick with a Bug...my advice...

Feathered underwear is fun, too..

Doesn't mean I want to wear them.

DeathCrew77 can do whatever he wants to his Thing, its HIS, and that's the nice thing about freedom...you do what you want...

I'd rather have the most collectible VW in the modern era for nice trips where I can enjoy it properly...and so can everyone else looking at it as I go by...surfboards, blonde, and all...

And my Baja for real offroading, with the right tools underneath it and the development trial and error of thousands to draw upon...and do it without having to completely re-invent everything.

That Thing's ball-joint front, for example, having to spend bucks to try to ramp it up enough for off-road, when I can just change a frame head on a Bug pan and install a durable, efficient link-pin instead...and dust the poor guy's Thing as he struggles with the terrain and inadequate tools...

Racing a classic is stupid...when you can get a built Mitsubishi Evo 10 that will dust it in the first fifteen seconds from the flag drop, and for a whole lot less than a classic Ferrari...its more about the posing, than the accuracy and capability of the tools, it seems to me...

Perhaps...

I'm building a Baja that will resemble everyone else's slightly...but with MY touches...no bright chrome anywhere, a five or six color military camouflage pattern, military lighting, body lift, 002 (I decided) with Gene Berg intermediate housing (getting the rod down into the tunnel and straight with the transaxle), kingpin front, IRS rear, 4 wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, electric windows and door locks, A/C, and widened track...

Not to mention the ham set and electric gun locks...

And I'm not destroying a Hebmuller with an original Judson blower and Okrasa kit to do it, either...

Something to think about, folks...
