Post Post subject: New Baja Build.. W/ Questions

Ok guys let me introduce myself. I'm 18 and have just gotten a Baja to build. I started with a simple pan buggy and now I'm hooked on Vw's.

Stats:
1969 Bug
1600 DP
Single Carb
IRS rear
Adjusters up front

I have a 4 pt bolt in cage(IDK how safe these kit roll cages look)
2 RaceCraft Susp. Seats
Set of 30x9.50x15's if they will fit
Fuel Cell to replace the back seat

I have a few questions though..

Right now it doesnt charge. I did the two tests I read about and the generator puts about 40-50 volts out with no load, so it tested good right? I also polarized it and it spun.. (another indication it is good?)

It wasnt passing the tests until I found a wire broken inside. It was the wire that connects to the DF terminal on the inside of the generator. Not the brush wire though..

The regulator looks new so obviously the P.O had the same problem..

The GEN light will come on if I run a jumper to its terminal on the regulator from the battery, but no other time. Not even if the belt is off. I think that is wrong, right?

I'm pretty mechanically inclined I just havent worked on VW's that much.. Give me a mopar and I can re-wire it in an hour lol.. (Ask me how I know Shocked )

Anyway, here she is.. Not to bad for what I got it for!

Welcome to AzBaja. If you can rewire an ol Mopar the VW is just as easy. The Bentley has the wiring diagram and test procedures for the generator. Generator supplies the ground for the gen light. With the key on if you ground the wire from the light to the regulator the light should light up. Building Bajas and Buggies shows how to modify the 4 point cage for best results.

I have a Duster and a Baja, Done wiring on both. If your Baja wiring is a rats nest just stand at the Back of the car and yank it all out. I did a full rewire on my baja in about 2 days. Has lasted me for well over 18 plus years now.

I also have ran an Orange Box from Duster on the Baja granted it has a Ford Engine, GM Alt, Chrysler Electron ignition and the Horn our of a Lincoln.

Haha Azbaja that is exactly what I did. I have since re wired almost everything, or at least have the wires laying in place. I found a rear windshield too! I'm trying to have it road worthy by my graduation in May

Ufta.. After a battle with the distributor I'm back making progress. Pictures coming tomorrow.

I have a set of 30x9.5x15's in the shop. Will they fit?. I put them up to the baja but its to close to call just by looking. What do you guys think?

They fit but trim the fenders or plan on launching the fenders in rough terrain.

Good to here. I think it will look sweet.

What about rubbing while turning? Is it bad?

Here is the progress from today..

-Mocked the seats
-Started a new dash
-Cleaned it up
-Tried to start it, no go

I have spark, i think I am getting fuel, gapped the new plugs, checked points... What am I missing? Timing?

-Mounted the VR and the other small box. What is the smaller one on the right?

More pics!

The relay on the right is the hi / low beam relay. Good spark and firing order correct? Fuel squirting from accelerator pump?

30 x 9.50s should fit fine on the rear. Too big for the front unless you have wider beam and longer arms.

- Is the firing order correct?
- Is the distributor properly installed?
- Definitely check the timing if it won't start.
