For those of you who have both linkpin and IRS, meaning you started with one or the other, and changed the other, and could do it all over again, would you start with a swing axle and linkpin, or ball joint and IRS?

Eventually I'd like both, but which would be easier to swap, which would be more important to do first if I wanted to go out playing right away?

No sand here, won't be Baja'ing more or less mudding and the like, if that makes a difference. Here in the pacific northwest. But given the chance ya I'd like to go over the small stuff fast and possibly catch some air. But it'll probably be big skinny mud terrains and slower moving.

my baja is a 65, so i started with link pin and a swing axle. if i were to do it again, and money WASN'T and object,i'd start with a balljoint and i'd be cutting the whole front of the car off, pushing it forward 6 inches, and putting on a wider beam with 4 inch longer arms and coilovers and bypasses.

if money WAS an object and i was on a college student's budget (like i was when i first started building mine) i would start with the 65 and older, and do the link pin in front, and worry about irs later. by the time i swapped mine to irs i had maybe a total of $70 bucks into it.

suspension was never a concern when i bought my baja, i bought a 65 so that i wouldn't have to go through emissions since i was building a turbo motor and didn't really want to deal with all of that.

It is easier to swap a LP frame head onto a IRS pan than add IRS brackets to a LP pan.

Ya that's what I've read. I just want to be able to go out and play right away, even if I can't push it real hard. Read something about later model synchros in the IRS? Something, can't recall. But think I'm leaning towards lattest model standard I can get that's structurally sound.

I would start with an IRS car. My 67 was a Balljoint swingaxle.

Wy start with the IRS? 1st thing most people do is install a cage. You run the cage off the front beam so that is the best time to change it. No big deal as your cutting up the car tat that time.

I agree.
And you don't need to bother with the linkpin frame head. The cage will support the beam.
