I have finally decided to chop up my 74 standard and build a baja. It currently has a 1600 dp with about 50K on it. I would like to put a water-cooled engine in it. After months of research I have narrowed it down to the Subaru ea-81 or a carbed 1.8 8-valve (early gti) engine. I believe I have read every blog on the web related to both conversions. The ea-81 does not produce a lot of power (90-ish with bolt-on mods) but it will run forever. The 8-valve has more power potential but is probably slightly heavier. This car will probably spend 70% of its life as a daily driver. Before anyone tells me to throw an ej22 in it, I have ruled that out because I hate wiring harnesses, computers, and fuel injection. It will be driven in temperatures rangine from -14 to 114. Does anyone have experience with either of these engines? I am shooting for bulletproof and idiotproof.

GTI engine It is nearly built proof it will run at 4000-6000 rpms and not whimper a bit. Parts are dirt cheap and it is easy to work on. With either conversion keep the ECM in the car out of any chance of getting wet.

Good advice. I will go that route. Not to completely contradict my original statement but is anyone running CIS offroad? I had an 86 GTI 8-valve with CIS. I tried to kill it but it could handle all of the abuse I could give it. The CIS never gave me any problems and it seems simple enough.

I never got around to it. In Europe they ran plenty of offroad rally Audis and VWs with CIS. You should be fine.
