Ok so heres the story im currently deployed to Afghanistan right now and I dont get home till April. Well ive always wanted to get into baja and a motorsport of some sort well growing up Dad had bugs so I know the this and thats and some of what im doing but not nearly enough. Ok so I talked the wife into letting me do it. Than made her drive to PHX to check it out and buy it from what I know, its in great condition but not perfect I was'nt looking for perfect. Well the guy I bought it from knew nothing about it other than that it was a 1600cc and a 1964 baja, now I can see from the photos that it may very well be a 1600cc and that it has a single glass pack exhaust system and enough offroad lights im not going to get lost out there in the dark. and a CB radio in case my phone just happens to die. Ok so thats where you come in pros and cons of my bug. Also of corse I want bigger tires and I want to go off road but this will be a daily driver for the time so it most handle the roads too. Give me pointers or hell tell me what I need. I want a new exhaust system im looking at going out and doing a 1 5/8 inch ceramic competition exhaust W/SS muffler will this work or be a bad idea on my bug. It will be getting a bit of a make over soon with a crome kit. But thats about it for now let me know guys [img][/img][img][/img]Thanks!

That looks like a great starting point! For more lift you could add a thing beam, raised spindles, turn the torsions, or add 3x3 rear arms..... the possibilities are endless. My car has turned torsions and a 2 inch custom body lift, and it fits 28" front and 30x10.50 rear super swamper TSL radials without rubbing.

The engine looks like a good starting point as well, as long as it was regularly maintained (VWs are maintenance happy) Keep up on Valve adjustments, oil changes, etc.

I wouldnt personally go with a chrome exhaust, Its just more to polish. My car has a ceramic coated Tri-mill exhaust that looks good and sounds good, and doesnt need polished all the time.

The trannys, behind a mostly stock engine, hold up very well. Check (and replace if worn) your brakes, shock absorbers, and other usual wear items, and check the spot under the battery on the rear passenger side for rust (common spot on VWs)

Overall, dont be afraid to ask questions! We are here to help Very Happy

Thanks for your sercice to our country. Nice present. Leave the header/ muffler alone just sand it smooth and paint it or just keep wiping it with WD 40 until it develops a nice blue/black metal patina from the oil burning off. Even the high dollar ceramic coated ones turn after a awhile and a larger one kills performance and eliminates your heat. As it is you'll have heat and defrosters which you really appreciate in the high desert. Do get a better air filter. Spend you money wisely. Get the Building Bajas and Buggies book advertised on AZBAJA. Do all the basically free reliability tips. Install rear skid plate, oil temp, oil pressure, voltmeter, cylinder head temp and A/F ratio guage. Note I left out the tach as it is as usefull as those 8" sewer pipe exhaust tips you see on trucks. Money wasted on a tach is better spent on a full flow oil pump, oil filter, braided hoses, oil thermostat and oil cooler. Put at least one of the offroad lights for a back up light. Add a set of suspension seats and wide seat belts. With the stock engine don't go any taller than 28" tires in the rear. 28" tall front tires also greatly improve the ride off road but cut down on your turning radius a bit but it is a good compromise. Now for about $1500 your going to be able to go through 90% of the places any other Baja will and quite a few places the high dollar ones can't go.
If you want a high dollar desert racer build a second Baja as you can always use old reliable while you build it and correct any driver errors.

This is sound advise, I use my ugly old bug as a daily driver here in Orygun. For a daily keep it simple and reliable. If the underpinnings are in as good a shape as the outside looks it should be a good car. And if not stock parts are cheap to get it reliable.

Thanks for your service.
Perrib offers good advice above. A 1-5/8 exhaust will only hurt your hp for the engine you have and eliminate heat as perrib says. 1600 class racers use 1-3/8 headers!
I would replace the glasspack with a quiet pack or a Turbo muffler for better sound and better hp. I have the same header as yours on my daily driver running a 1776 with a QP. Sounds great and is technically legal even here in California where the sound standard is tough and no louder than stock is all that is allowed. You can buy the muffler replacement without replacing the whole header. My header has the muffler clamped to the 2" collector tube. A $20 Turbo Muffler will clamp right on and cutting the end off the glasspack and clamping it on the end of the turbo muff will give you a dirt cheap upgrade. But make a 1/16-1/8 x 1" strap wrapped around the muffler body and bolted at both ends to the 3-bolt flange on the header for support. Still at around $25 for that. On a daily driver, your ears and your neighbors will thank you.

As for upgrading the chassis, I say drive it a while. Go on some offroad outings with other Baja bugs before you decide what modifications you want or gotta have. The stock chassis is amazingly capable with just a little torsion rotation for ground clearance and maybe KYB gas-a-just shocks you can do Jeep trails or cruise the desert with some occasional whoops and modest jumps. Don't start out thinking it's gonna be doing Metal Mulisha stuff. It's a Baja, not a dirt bike. A roll cage and better belts should always come before radical suspension mods. It's EZ to roll a car or truck offroad
socalbajas.yuku.com/sr...rs-Rebuild
and the cage is needed to support serious suspension anyway.

Hey Thanks also great to know information, it has a 6 point roll cage already with 4 point seatbelts in the front two seats both are reclining bucket, but what im not sure about is if they are sitting on the right seat mounts... Like I said ide like to just keep up with small fun offroading and if on the weekends I want to get into something larger... im thinking skid plates and bigger tires and a exhaust upgrade and air intake upgread for now maybe a little engine dress up. Keep it coming!

X2. I forgot you had a glass pack. You need to be able to hear your engine. Spare parts is also something I left out. Until you install 14 mm lug studs spare lug nuts are a good thing to keep as are a tow strap, rachet strap, lenght of chain, clutch cable, clutch hook, acc. cable, generator belt, generator strap, barrel nut, wire, wire connectors, used tie rods, cv joint(s), axle nut, misc nuts, washers, cottor pins & bolts, fuel hose, clamps, tape (electrical and duct), baling wire, valve stems, tire patches / plugs, air compressor, jack, good tools, towels, steering coupler, waterless hand cleaner and a small first aid kit.
Before the first trip out take the time to check every nut and bolt for tightness. With larger tires at least one lug bolt tends to loosen every offroad trip. After you check everything a couple of times after offroading you'll find out what repeat offenders need lock tight, saftey wire, double nutting or all three. I snapped the clamp bolts in the steering box but was still able to run the rest of the day with the box chained and rachet strapped in place.
