What I have is a very ugly orange '73 FI Squareback. It's sat for about 20 years. I bought it about 2 years ago so make that 22 years it's sat lol. I've made attempts to get it running to no avail.
I've changed or done the following:
Fuel pump, lines, injectors and filter
Cleaned out fuel tank
Plug, wires, condensor and coil
new ignition switch
cleaned all grounds
changed oil

It turns over, but I've only gotten one, ONE, spark and it was a very week one at that.
First step is to get it running, next would be to lift it. I'm on a limited budget and time (new baby with stay at home mom) So this project will be a long one.
Here's a pic.....

Here's what I have in mind for it......

Got it running! Thanks to some tips by Russ on TheSamba, we were able to determine that the "new" condensor was no good. I bought another and it fired right up!
It sounds great. I need to adjust the valves tho.
The license plate says it was last registered in 1986. So, 25 years later and it's running again!
I took it around the block and it has no breaks and was leaking a lot of oil from the oil cooler. I replaced the seals and it's good to go.
Next step is to get the brakes working. Followed by fixing the door hinges. (one hinge on each side iscompletely busted.)
Then I can think about lifting it. I'll need some tips and help with that. I'm trying to read up as much as I can about it.

I started going thru the brakes. The front and rear break pads are still plenty thick. The resevoir was bone dry. I started pumping fluid thru the veins and discoverd a leaking wheel cylinder and a leaking front break line. To be expected on a car that has been sitting for 25 yrs.

Was going to pick a car on CL this moring for the brake lines, but when I woke up and attempted to use the can my back went out on me as I attempted to sit. I was screaming like a little girl! It turned out to be severe back spasms. They were so strong it wrapped around my chest and was resticting my breathing. I starting getting lite headed so I made my way to the living room with my drawers still down where I knew my wife was. I was afraid that if I passed out in the bathroom she wouldn't have known. I landed slumpped over on the couch. I couldn't move so my wife had me transported to the ER. (I had her pull up my drawers before the paramedics got there) I'm back home and all hopped up on morphine now.

Needless to say my project is on hold until I get the spasms and pain under control. I should be fine by next weekend to get toolin' again.

I'm "back" in business. Picked up some new front brake lines and brake cylinders from BAP. Looks like the master cylinder is no good. So that's next.

I also began to adjust the rear suspension. Struggleing with pulling out the torsion bar as expected.

Of course Daryl Bugzyla has built an awesome fastback T3 but maybe more in line with a tight budget would be the T3 Squareback that 57baja on here built for his teenage son.
socalbajas.yuku.com/to...back-Build

For your back...speaking from experience, get your belly in shape to keep your back from trying to do all the work.
There is a stretching exercise I learned in physical therapy for my back:
- Lay on your back on a firm surface. Carpeted floor will do.
- Pull one knee toward your chest assisting with your hands cupped on your knee. Hold for a 5 count then relax.
- Then after a 5 count, repeat with the other knee.
- Repeat up to 5X each knee.
The point of this is to firm your abs while stretching your lower back muscles.
Check with your doctor before you try it though.
Fix your back or the Bug and all other life will be no fun.

Fix your back or the Bug and all other life will be no fun.

Thanks. That is one of the exercises I was told to do. I do them ever so often, but not as much as I should.

As far as the build thread, I've gone thru both of thoes. Thanks, if you have any other t3 build threads pass them on too.

It's been quite cold in Phoenix lately (30s), too cold for me to want and tool on the squareback in the mornings that's for sure.

Cool weather can make back muscles extra stiff and unwilling to cooperate.
Sub-freezing temps are the winter norm here in the SoCal Mojave high desert. (When you see the desert on TV it's nearly always literally right in my neighborhood, you just can't see homes in the direction they point the cameras) But I'm inside right now waiting for the frost to melt off a little before heading out to the shop to work.

Can't think of any other T3 threads worthy of mention off hand. There is another guy on SoCal Bajas who has a T3, but he's not kept in contact and was using 57Baja's for inspiration and info, so nothing new there.

Spent some time on the T3 this week. I need a new master cylinder, but nobody has one. BAP may, but it's 140 bucks! Ouch. SO I picked up a rebuild kit and going to give that a whirl.

I lubbed up the windows, so they actaully roll up and down now. I aslo scrapped with a razor blade the 25 years of crap off the windows from sitting that long.

Adjusted valves.

Put some new seats in. Picked them up from the GCC swap meet for 80 bucks. They're take offs from some van.

Attempted to raise the rear suspension, but it's quite difficult. I couldn't get the inside splines to come loose. I was only able to turn the outside a notch, but it was a bitch to get the spring plate back into position. I still want to lift it a little higher tho, because it's basically at normal highth now because it sagged.
The other problem is now the cover plate will not line up with the bolt holes.

take a couple of punches or screwdrivers and stick them in some of the holes to help align the cap. start trying to thread the bolts in, one at a time. get all the bolts started and then snug them down. that's how i did it when i reindexed my rear

Thanks, I'll give that a shot. It had crossed my mind, but I was worried about stripping the treads.
I still want to raise it more. So I'll give it another try. I havn't even attempted the other side yet!

Any tricks to getting the spring plate back over the notch easier? What a PITA!

is it a swing axle or irs? if its irs and you need more leverage on the spring plate, bolt the trailing arm to it, and stick the jack under the arm and jack it up. or jack it up, and get it close, and help "move" it over with a hammer. that's how we had to do mine. it kinda is a royal pain but its doable with a little persuasion

IRS...Yeah it was doable and a royal pain like you said.

I think I'm going to make a 2' "arm" out of a thick cage steel I have laying around. I'll attach it to the existing bolt holes on the spring plate to gain some leverage.
