sorry it took me so long to post these few pictures, but after this run i spent some time adding a new skid plate on MY RAIL. let me know if any of the pics are wrong as far as the titles or descriptions.

sorry i didnt take more pics but most of the time we were driving and with the dust and curvy roads you couldnt see anyone in front of you.

i do have a short movie of a red jeep towing a rail that broke the tranny up a canyon/crossing, but dont know how to up load it to photobucket. if someone can guide me.

other than the times i needed a helping hand or a push or a pull, this run was fun, i wish the members would not assume everyone wants to take the rough trails, and offer the choices of lesser punishment to the rails... i dont mind fixing MY RAIL but do want it to last. only after we got to camp i found out there was a lesser/smoother longer trail i might have gone on... but who knows.

tried several times to upload or post pics, i dont know what i am doing wrong so, i guess i must find a 14 year old kid to help me with this computer crap.... anyhow, if you want to see some pics from the run please visit my photobucket site.

MY RAIL PICS pictures by ikill6453 - Photobucket
or at photobucket under ikill6453 and the album is called MY RAIL PICS

i will try to learn this cut and paste stuff but i dont like the taste of glue....lol

Here's some of your pics. I linked them from your album. If you put your cursor ON one of your pics on photobucket, a box will drop down below the pic with like four lines of script. One of them starts with "IMG". Highlight and copy that line of script, then come back over here to your post and paste it in a reply. That's ALL there is to it!

There was a great turn out by a bunch of great people for this run. Very Happy I had never stayed at the Horse Thief Basin campsite. It is really a nice place.
The trail has become easier since the road was graded from CK to Oro Belle. Before the section from Oro Belle to CK was the harder part.
Kenny gets the hard luck award. He just got his 4x1 arms and coil overs installed and his transaxle headed south before he could even give them a good work out.

The follow Wednesday I went with AZ 4x4 Off Road Recovery to CK for a night recovery of a Toyota Tacoma stuck on the second water fall before Oro Belle. No pictures sine it was an 8pm to 2am recovery. Joe's truck suffered a stripped pitman arm which was workable but then a broken steering box input shaft really slowed us down. I used two come alongs to steer it through the Oro Belle and put it in a spot where traffic could pass.
This is where Mike was sideways. It looks very innocent from this angle.

Thursday we were back in CK fixing the recovery truck.

I drove this Jeep back from the Oro Belle to Phoenix on the trail it was great on the 192 road. From CK to I 17 it had a tendency to get very loose in corners even in four wheel hi at 15 mph the rear end tried to pass the front end every chance it could in washboard corners.

Special thanks to Bob and Rays Truck Salvage for the box and pitman arm.

We made it to Rock Springs Cafe by 7.45 pm. This place has awesum 1/2 pound hamburgers and many different pies to chose from for dessert.

Looked like a lot of fun. Been over the trail a couple times, once in the buggy and once on the bike. Think I had more fun on the bike. When I went in the buggy, this is what happened.

This is what happens when you use the cheap Brazilian hubs and then try to carry a 400lb passenger over very rocky terrain. It's a recipe for disaster. Spent about 4 hours hanging out, got a ride down, went back up with parts and made it back home by about 2am. LOOOONNNNG Day!

Ouch that's a new one to me! on my rail I mount my spare ties to a rear drum so if I ever break a rear hub (I've broken everything else it seems like) I can still move under my own power. P.S. ripped out about half of my gears on first gear. Bill hooked me up with the parts that I need to rebuild my tranny over at Az Trans Ex so should be up and running in a few weeks to break something else:-) Dalton wrote a trip report on it at www.arizonavolkswagenclub.com

That is very typical of the low quality of Brazilian drums. I'd use worn out oem German VWs before ever mounting a Brazilian drum on any of my off road rides.

Crown King Oct 16th 2010

Author: Dalton

Carnage: two flats, stripped gear, and my horn broke!!

Quote of the trip: “The trail was not as bad as I remember it.”

WOW!!! What an event!! I am not sure where to start??.. We had 11 vehicles bent on making it up the back way to Crown King thru Orabel and 2 came up the front way just to camp with us. We had the AZ Baja Club come out to play with us, plus some new members of the AVC. I just want to start by saying what a great bunch of guys from the AZ Baja Club; they were fun to ride and camp with. The Cow Creek Road was bladed and graded and even wider in a few spots. When we got to the Orabel Road it was smooth all the way to El Camino Hill, it was washed out in a few spots but I have seen it worse. Someone cut a bypass around the face rock in the hill. The trail all the way up to ¼ mile from Orabel was as always but there was a rock bed that was killing a bunch of ATC’s that had the trail blocked. These guys broke down with only Gas and beer to get them out … NO TOOLS! I was able to get around them by taking a UGLY.. VERY UGLY, path but most of our group got caught behind them, I was told that the only way to keep moving was to helped them walk their bikes up to Orabel – it was a traffic jam. Once the group got by the ATC’s most of us had lunch in Crown King and then off to the lean-to’s. Some kids ran their nice jeep off the road and into a tree, they seemed to be ok. We gave them a ride into town to give AAA a call. I would have given money to listen in on that phone call. There were plenty of lean-to’s open for us but most of the AVC and some of the AZ Baja Club all packed into sites 1 and 2 with tents all over the place. We well exceeded the maximum number of people at the campsites. Some of the AZ Baja Club came up for just the day and went back down that night. At camp most of the kids ganged up with their flashlights and went on repeated trips into woods looking for wood, they kept the fires well stocked. Paula’s new friend Randy impressed the whole group with her BBQ vegetables….. OMG! They were SOOOOO good. Randy made sure there was plenty for everybody. With one big grill and lots of people cooking on it, Randy was helping everybody with organizing the grill. The next morning Randy and Paula were at my door looking for hot coffee….(GRRRRR!) I was talking with Randy about the way I was making my coffee, Randy helped me improve my “Black Pot of Death” I was making. Plus gave me some new ideas for the next camp out. I can’t wait to try them out. The weather was Awesome! No rain. We packed up and stopped by Scenic Outlook #1 to say Hi to Tom and Gene, we told a few stories and went into town for breakfast and down the hill to Phoenix. I am anxious for the next outing.

We all have to learn some time right? I like the idea of attaching a hub to the spare tire.....have to remember that one.
