Greeting from the oil slicked, Katrina blown area of the world!!!!

MURZ, here......

Just picked up a rust free 68 baja. Plans are to build it up into a street baja with a wicked nasty IDA fed 2276. The body needs paint and probably will be painted VOODOO blue (FJ Cruiser color). I am debating between chevy pattern WELD wheels or wide five centerlines. I love the look of the centerlines, but they have doubled in price in the last couple of years. Weld wheels are an easy find most days on craigslist.

Engine is unknown displacement and has 175lbs of compression in each hole.... .448" lift cam. Full flowed... I stuck some 45 dells on it today and it sounds like a very angry two stroke!!! I plan on pulling it down for exploratory surgery and refresh. It runs good, but i wont be able to sleep at night not knowing what it is.....

Some pics....

If I were to order a new baja kit(to save bodywork time) who makes the best kit???

Welcome to AZBAJA. Nice material to start your project with. Interesting coil mount. Smile Carbs sounded out of sync. MArk V Fiber Glass in Nevada for the kit.

Yea, how you like that fan shroud too?? Just a test run, did not touch the carbs...just bolted them on.

I thought it was very stealth. I knew it weas only a test fire. I just don't like the sound of unsyncronized carbs. Smile

I know this is very unscientific, but with 175lbs of cranking compression, what do you guys estimate the compression ratio to be....at least 10:1 huh??

I went out and sync the carbs, and did a best lean idle....these babies are probably way too big for this engine. 45 dells, with 38 vents, 70 idles, 170 mains, 200 airs. Throttle response is not crisp at all.... I also have a set of 44 webers with 36 vents I can try on it..

I guess I first need to at least pull one head to see what I am dealing with...valve size, pistons, and stroke. PO said it was a 1800....I said cool made no big deal of it. When I got it home I measured valve lift at .448-450 and the heads are stamped 94. Compression was 175 and the heads have been ported. I really dont think the guy knew what he had...

Cam duration, altitude, throttle plates open or close affect compression psi readings.
A rough conversion is:
Cranking pressure (psi) = CR raised to the 1.3 power x 14.7 x 2/3x .90 (average after market cam) Your compression psi works out to 10.0 to 1
Don't multiply by .90 if it is a stock cam.
For a Mild cam us .95, for drag racing use .85

OK, done to bidness. Got some sanding done on the car, stripped the interior, and ordered a bunch of stuff. Still can't find any reasonably priced wide five centerlines!!!! DAMN!!!!

Yes, I have!! The PO left me some nice evenly spaced holes in the roof!!!! I guess they were for lights. When I started sanding the roof, one by one they fell into the headliner. I pulled the windshield, and pulled the headliner back to expose the holes. The plan is to just back the holes with quarter sized 16 gauge sheet metal, mig them in and skim with some body filler. I still can not get over how a 1968 can have NO rust!!
