Well "Hi there" from Chi-Town to you other Baja nuts.

Been on the forums here for a week or so. I visited a few times before without registering / posting. I'm relatively new to Bajas and to the air cooled VWs, but the family had a 1969 VW Squareback in San Diego back in the 70s and 80s while I was growing up. One of my fondest memories are "driving" a friend's Baja. We used to sit on the roof and used our feet, hanging through the sunroof, to steer the vehicle. It was our way of playing "tank." (Kids DON'T try this at home.)

I lived in San Diego until 2000 and moved to the Chicago suburbs in 2000. I'm currently a member of a few VW clubs locally but the atmosphere is that Bajas and Dune Buggies are not in the same "class" as classic Beetles, so I expanded my search and found AZBaja on a web search. Thank you for hosting and starting the site / club.

We currently own two air cooled VWs:
- a 1967 full size chassis Bandit Dune Buggy (built in Colorado in the early 70s and sold through Montgomery Ward catalogs.
- a 1972 standard Baja Bug that I just acquired less than a month ago ... with an "interesting" rear end.

Photos of the Dune Buggy follow. This car is currently in pieces with the body removed and the chassis / motor in pieces. The goal was to build this as a summer / weekend cruiser into Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. I hope to complete it in 2010.

Photos of the Baja. I bought this from a guy who purchased it in 2003, drove it from the dealership to his garage and parked it. The next time it was moved was in December 2009 from his garage to mine. I bought this as a "daily" driver as opposed to my 13 MPG Ford Expedition. This vehicle "runs" as defined in the dictionary, but needs some help and a lot of "make-up" before I feel comfortable driving her.

Yes ... I know the Baja's rear end is the "prettiest" you've ever seen, but I plan on changing it to a more "standard" Baja rear end.

Neither vehicle has a name, so I'm looking to name them. Suggestions are welcome ... as long as they are "nice" names. Very Happy The Baja is my six year old son's, the Buggy will be my baby as soon as it starts running, although I plan on driving my "son's" baja, until he comes of age to get his driver's license

Wish me luck. It's a pleasure being a member of this club. I hope to see you guys / gals some day.

Welcome. That sure is a strange rear end, I'd loose it.

Welcome to AZBAJA. I would just trim the deck lid at the fender line and weld a flat section of steel to mimic the fenders. It will keep the rain and snow out of the engine and keep some of the heat in it. Once the lights are on the bumber it will look good. The buggy looks like it will be a wheelie machine.

Thanks for the warm welcome folks.

The baja should be running by the middle of March with minor changes. The buggy may be ready by the end of 2010 ... well maybe 2011, although I don't know about the ... wheelie machine comment. I'm too damn old to be doing any wheelies on anything. Very Happy

I love going on the forums and seeing your bajas / projects and knowing that while it's 8 degrees above zero here in the Chicagoland area (this past week,) you guys in Arizona are going out and "camping" in your bajas. Makes me a bit jealous ... to say the least.

Well it took some time and a few sawzall blades, but these are the newest pictures of my baja (my six year old named him Buddy.) Not as pretty as some of your cars, but not bad for a $200 buy and some time. Hell of a learning experience also. Buddy is a runner and fun to drive, but we keep him on the road most of the time.

Just thought I would finally post up an update.

Buddy still needs some work, floor pans and heater channels need patch welding, windows needs new seals, interior needs cleaning and customizing, but he's running and that was the major battle.

Thanks for the welcome back.

I've attended the buggy builder show for the past three years and had a great time, each time. It's a four hour drive for me from Chicago, but I still love it. I tried to attend a few of the MI GoodVolks Folks shows, but something came up every time this year, maybe 2011 will be better and I'll get out there to the drag-strip or something.

I have not done anything to the Bandit, but that's on the list for winter 2010 after I finish the rest of the baja (hopefully.)

Are you out of the Lansing area or Michiana?

Buddy is looking good! I like the rear fenders and tail light layout. Looks tough! Cool
Keep it up! BTW. Pretty usually equals less fun. You don't have to make it pretty to have fun or you'll be worried about mess'n it up. People ask me why I romp around in mine with the nice paint all the time. I say, I had to paint it so I can scratch it up. Jeez! It's a Baja for goodness sakes!

Keep us posted!

Thanks all for the kind words and the votes of confidence. We know Buddy won't win any 1st prizes at the local shows, but we're having fun and learning a lot about VWs. I'd love a new paint job, but there's a lot more work to do before we touch a paint gun.

Talking about paint ... anyone shoot a car using Rustoleum? Any special prep work you would recommend? We're picking up a fiberglass front end for him for $100 and need to shoot it as it's white colored right now. Any recommendations are appreciated.
