Ok so here are my issues

-Engine running real rough if at all. Tried to adjust the valves and timing and that only seemed to make it worse. Did not test compression
-Having a hard time starting out in first. I have to slip the clutch for way to long and if I don’t I get a bad back and forth jerking.
-Black Plugs. Brand new only a few hours on them.
-Seems to be burning oil. Has a bit of white smoke coming from the exhaust.
-Back firing when the rpm's come down
-Battery Draining over a period of about two days
-Large oil leak. Not sure where it is coming from it kind of looks like the push rod tubes but it also might be coming from the case. Its way to junked up down there to see anything.

New parts….
-Complete rewire
-New carb
-New plugs, wires, dist cap and rotor, exhaust gaskets
-probably a few other things but I can’t remember

I have been having a real hard time with the Baja and have not been working on it much because of that. I guess I just don’t know what I’m doing or I just don’t know how to read and interpret directions so I need some help. I wish that I lived closer to you guys so I could have some hands on help that would make things much easier to learn. So please help me decide what I should do to fix things and learn a little along the way. I took it to the local VW shop where I have been getting my parts and had them do the wire and some other things but quality of work is not up to par. I would like to get this thing running smooth and back on the trail so I can enjoy it. Please help me diagnose my problems so I can go about fixing them. If you think I need to pull the motor and rebuild the whole thing then tell me. If you think I’m an idiot and don’t know what I’m doing and should stop then tell me I just need honest advice on how to change my Baja situation. Thank You guys so much you have been a great help throughout my build

A rewire with an original harness is about 6-8 hours plus the harness. About $700 or more at most shops.Even when new, Bug wiring look like a controlled rats nest. Yes they should of checked it for a parasitic draw. Post a picture.

A new carb and labor is at least $200 black plugs no heat risers, stuck choke etc.

Rear wheel bearing (one) $100

Major service $175 Did you tell them it needed to pass emissions?

Did they tell you more work was needed to make it right?

The price is pretty normal but not the service. Did they tell you more work was needed to make it right? If not you should of brought it right back. Now you might have waited to long.

No they did not say that there would be any additional work needed. I thought the price was alright but the work was just sub par. Wire harness was not included in the cost. Not sure what you mean by no heat risers, like they are blocked. If it is the choke how can i fix? Thanks

It appears so. Why did you not return to get them to warranty the work?

to be honest i am not really sure. I was just so fed up with everything I was having trouble with and then when I decided to pay to fix it i got screwed once again. You ever had those moments where you just didnt want to deal with something anymore...this was it. I guess i could try to go back but its been to late now which is why I am asking you.

Mow it is tome to get a book on automotive wiring basics and the Bentley manual (The Samba has the Bentley wiring diagrams on line.) but you still need it for procedures and specificatons. Once your familiar with voltage drops and dead short testing you can fix your wiring.
If you do your Google homework there is plenty of data out there on diagnosing carb troubles. You may even be lucky enough to have a bad new carb or possibly your starting in 3rd instead of first gear.

Definitely not starting in third...give me a little credit haha. Ordered the books yesterday should be here this week. Also having trouble with the brakes, whenever I put even the slightest bit of pressure on them it pulls me hard left . Any ideas.

Gotta start at the begining... get the battery probs and engine probs first..

While figuring out wiring get a compression test or buy a gage to do it... it may answer many motor questions you have as far as plugs, idling, oil use and leaks etcetc..

Perri Knows his stuff and any advice he says take at face value...

I had to ask since in the past I have seen it many times. The brakes are only working on the side it is pulling towards.

a couple more questions-- You must have driven it to know about the brakes- so did you get to go through the gears or putting around in first? This will help figure out why its hard to take off in 1st (is it first only or is it fine once it's going?). I understand the asking about 3rd gear- bad coupler but I see you replaced yours.. even after replacing mine took 3 tries to get the shifter in just the right spot to get all gears

And for the wiring- once you know how to use a meter to find parasitic loss then it gets easy to isolate which wire/wires are the culprit.

As for the brakes you can have someone push the pedal while you watch at the caliper/brake shoes, or jack up and spin by hand while someone brakes- should be easy to see whats not working.. If you havent purged all brake fluid and replaced it and bled the brakes do so first. The stock brakes are not self adjusting so if they all move (not stuck) they may need adjusting. if any brakes dont move the wheel cylinder might need replacing.
