My son and I have deceided to build a Baja. We searched for a few weeks and finally found a suitable project car. It's a 1970 standatd that is in pretty good shape for a Michigan bug and it runs. Here are some pictures of our progress so far. Our plans are to use it for a daily driver and off road trails here in Michigan. No serious off road jumping or anything like that.

It looks like someone cut holes in the sideof the tunnel. I am guessing it was done to to make replacing cables easier. Should I weld these closed, or keep them for future cable replacement?

Is this the correct routing for the brake line around the pedal assembly?

Heres some updated pictures of the project. Cut the old pans out. Wasn't too hard because they were kind of rusty.

Took the front end apart and welded the shock towers. I took the picture in low resolution so our welds didn't look so bad. They arent pretty but they will work.

Heres a couple of spots on the front and tunnel that we had to weld patches.

Front end going back together with new ball joints, tie rods, grease seals, and steering dampner.

Reindexing the rear suspension. It was sagging a bit so we brought it up a few degrees on both sides.

Heres a couple more pictures of the chassis. Since we're in Michigan and have rust issues to deal with, I treated the entire chassis with rust converter and then rust encapsulator. Even used a special can of stuff made for doing inside the tunnel. Once I get the floorpans on I think I will hit the entire underside with truck bed liner.
