Wow that was pretty sick build. I like how he kept the stinger at first, but the turbo seems like more fun.

Just curious about some of the details on that car, if anyone has checked it out. On most of the baja's I've seen on here the cage goes all the way through the sheet metal in front. On that baja it was bolted through. Is that strong enough? That's how T_Town set up the rear engine cage on mine, but it's not an integral part of the chassis and doesn't really have any load on it, unless I back into a tree Shocked It seems like it must be fine since he jumped it a bit and it didn't break.

I was thinking, since his wheelbase isn't stretched the beam is still bolted to the frame head right? So that would limit the necessity to have tube going through the sheet metal?

Thanks for the link, that was really close to what i had pictured in my mind - the subaru motor. i was even planning on reducing weight by chopping the top for the roll cage and removing the doors, perhaps fabbing some fiberglass or something there like jeeps and oldschool broncos have+ it will increase your line of sight...still not sure yet about which way ill go (baja vs rail) but now you really got my gears spinning!

I don't know about anyone else, but I have YET to see that done to where it still looked decent. I don't think I'd part with the doors. If you pull the glass out of them, they don't weigh much at all. If there IS a small weight penalty, I'd probably still take that just for the safety of still being somewhat enclosed in the car.

Just my .02.

thats true i guess after gutting the door it wouldnt make too much of a weight difference in the grand scheme of things compared to fiberglass...especially knowing how me and my buddy are we'd probably get a little too crazy with the epoxy! Very Happy

Yeah all he did was cut the top half of the frame head off because it started out as a bj front end and he switched to the lp. So the beam bolts in the stock location for the bottom and he just fabbed up the top part because he didnt want to cut the whole front off to switch to a lp framehead. In his post he came to the conclusion that any force on the top beam would not be pushing the bars threw the fire wall but pulling it away because the beam would pivot at the lower mounts and the force from driving would be coming from the front. When I switch to a lp front end Im gonna do it this way.. the car has not had any problems with the beam mounts and has been around and driven for a few years and in the video it looks like hes not afraid to beat on it either !!

Mine started out as BJ and was converted to LP, but it's been stretched 6" so I guess that it would necessitate it being tied to the cage. The extra length would put more stress on the frame-head and that would be bad juju.

Guess I have to agree with most everyone else. While it can be done, don't expect a "low budget" Baja to dune all that well. It will get around, but not in the big stuff. The Subaru one one the Sand Assoc site dunes pretty good, but he has between 25K and 30K in it. That's not fat off, I know, cause I will have about that in the ghia when it is all done. I do expect it to dune pretty good, but am still planning on keeping the rail. If you do go forward with the project, spend some money on a good strong low geared trans. It can make a stock 1600 feel like it has some power. Then you can add to it later. Just my thoughts. Good luck.

You can have fun on the cheap in a Baja. My friend had a 1600 cc turbo charged mostly stock Baja with paddles. He could not play king of the hill but it was pretty quick as it would out pull my 15 sec 1/4 mile off road engine up the hills at Gordon Wells and Patton Valley. I think he had about 2 grand in the whole Baja.

Front tires look like bias ply 700x15 Yokahama Super Diggers. You can almost run them flat.
