I stripped everything out of my baja 2 weeks ago and planned on putting bed liner on the floor. Now I cant make up my mind if I still want to put bed liner or just use the carpet kit that was already in it? Carpet is in pretty good shape and would just need a good washing. The floor pan is all ready to go. Should I put in the bed liner or just go with carpet that I already have? I was wondering where I could buy some upholstery foam for under the carpet, and what kind of adhesive I should use?

between deciding whether to do bedliner or carpet, the main question is is this a DD or an offroad only car?? If its an offroad only car the bedliner would be easier to clean, as the carpet tends to soak up mud and water if you have holes in the body or pan.

when you ask about upholstery foam are you talking about the glued together particle type foam?? or just regular foam??
you should be able to get either at a fabric store/warehouse or carpet store.

as for glue i would recommend 3M spray adhesive. it comes in a spray can and comes in different strengths. I've used just the regular duty stuff for the carpet in my car, and the heavy duty-super tacky stuff for the headliner in my car.

Well right now it is a offroad baja, but I will use it as my dd as soon as I take out the plates for it. Not too sure of the foam that I need? The foam that was under the carpet when I took it out was really old and nasty, it looked to me as if it had some sort of netting on it, sort of like a fishing line type net around the foam. There are no holes in my pan, some surface rust but no holes. I'm just trying to see what would work out the best for my budget. I dont have alot of money and would like to put either bed liner or the carpet kit I already have? But if the foam is going to cost as much as the bed liner I might as well put the bed liner? Only reason I'm undecided is because I read that alot of people have had their bedliner crack & chip off and also the bed liner loses it color and turns into an ashy grey?

the underfoam is cheap depends on what you want you dont really even need it just makes the carpet a bit softer and whatnot

I wouldn't put foam down without sealing the floor really well in some manner. I think it'd hold moisture and lead to possible rust issues.

if you want dont really make a differnce if ur carpet was real nasty id pressure wash it and let it bake in the sun for a few days first

I would make it and the carpet on the floor removeable. When it is wet you don't want it holding the water against the floor for days.

I see what you guys are saying. Would it be a good idea spray paint the pan and then put on the carpet with adhesive? or should I just leave the pan the way it is and glue on the carpet?

i undercoated the pan, applied some sound deadening material, and then carpet. wouldnt recommend foam.

I have never put carpet in my Baja and it was my daily driver for close to 15 years. When it was time for a car show I would just repaint the floor black.

The only cloth in the car besides the seats is the head liner and that was new when I traded m '76 T/A for the car/Bug.
