Post Post subject: Baja problems ? ?

I have a strange problem.
I'll explain the three symptoms:

1. When I go on and off the throttle (specially in 1st or 2nd gear) I hear a clunk and feel like.... loose motor mount.
2. When I accelerate I feel it pull the throttle cable and accelerate even more and when I let off the throttle I feel the gas pedal fall away from my foot like the cable suddenly gets loose.
3. It is really hard not get serious clutch chatter when I start off in first gear.

I removed, inspected and reinstalled with new hardware the two cradle motor mounts. I put a jack under the front mount, jacked it up and I see the rubber stretch but it is solid. I looked at everthing I can think of and it all looks good ? ?

Any ideas ? ?

"I see the rubber stretch"

How much does it strech? It should not be streching. This sure sounds like a front tranny mount/nose cone problem. If the motor/tranny are rocking on the back mounts, it would mess with the clutch and throttle. Try replacing the front mount with a solid or urethane one, I would bet that fixes it. The clutch chatter may be a seperate issue, but there is a good chance it is related.

I know I said "see the rubber stretch but it is solid" and that sounds kinda stupid. How can it stretch and still be solid ?
It is a 1970 bug so it has the front mount that is a rubber block with a metal plate fused to each side. I say solid to mean it is still all one piece and not broken.
How much stretch ? That depends how hard I push it up with the jack.
I got it to stretch at least an inch. I think you might be right that I should put a urethane front mount.
I wonder why it was not a problem before, I gotta think about what other work I've done recently.
I just put a dual advance distributor on the 1835 I have with dual delortos.
It runs a whole lot better ! !

An inch sounds like a lot. I would start with a fresh set of mounts.

i am experiencing the exact same problem. i have tightened all the mounting bolts. and i recently messed with the timing on the distributor and have yet to have access to a gun to get it exact- could this be it? the symptoms are identical, but i really dont understand how the timing could cause the problem??? also, my tranny keeps popping out in 1st only taking off, dont know how or if this fits into the equation....

I really don't think timing is the problem. If not tuned or timed right it might not run right but this throttle cable going loose or tight with stepping on the gas pedal is something else.
I just bought a set of urethane motor mounts and in a couple of days when I get em installed I'll post the results. Right now I got a set of rubber ones I put in new (brazilian?) about twelve years ago.
You said ur tranny is popping out of 1st. Is that cause you've got a lot of clutch chatter like me. Mine started with a little bit of chatter and gradually got worse day after day until mine now also popps out of 1st

ill be curious to hear how the mounts help.
i am not sure how the popping out evolved as i had a random kid give this fully built buggy to me when i saw him dragging it to the city dump (what else would you expect in jackson hole, wy- too much $$$). anyway, cheers

Chirco has the ureathane ones and a bolt in center strap. The badd pressure plate could make it move around but if you just dump the clutch it would not chatter or move. if it still moves then the mounts are the culprit. of course you could have a NY frame that is rotted out and the horns are moving more than the mounts.

No rust ! ! I just moved here from overseas military duty and brought this bug back from italy and I don't drive it on the salty winter roads ! !
I've almost got the motor out to change in a set of urethane mounts.
Is there any way to "see" a bad pressure plate ?

If it is a 3 finger cover one might be lower. The multi finger covers are harder to tell.

I got it fixed ! !
I pulled out the original (1970) mounts and found the front one with the rubber 3/4 ripped in two. When it was installed I couldn't see that it was almost broken into two pieces. I quess it was stretching so much and gave me all them heartaches about clutch chatter, throttle cable etc.
I got a digital picture and want to put in here so y'all can see but I can't figure out how to attach it ?
