Hey, folks. Like I stated, I am new to the VW/bug scene, but not offroading, as I have been playing out in the Kentucky woods for almost 10 years, plus I grew up in South Texas, out on the flatlands, so "drifting" as the younger crowd calls it was just a way to make a curve in the road straight for me! Very Happy Anyways, I got a 1971 Super about 2-3 weeks ago that had allready been stub-tailed, so I figured "why not go ahead and finish the job?" I will post some pictures up later, but for now, lets just say that she is pretty much the normal rooted out floor having bug. I DO have ALOT planned for it, esp. after hanging around here for awhile, and reading about what can and what cannot be done with these things. I am looking forward to rebuilding this thing into what I want, so after the intial pictures, I will be posting some others once in awhile, if that is all right?

Right now, I am trying to decide if I want to go ahead and refurb the T-4 from the 71 914 that is up on the hill behind my house (1771, 83hp) or go ahead and swap to something newer/easier to find parts for...

Welcome..
In case you didn't catch it, Supers are not suited for off roading. Unless you're gentle. The struts and frame head are a bit weaker than a BJ or link pin front end.
That being said, I am assuming you're gonna use it for off road purposes.

Hey guys. Thanks for the welcome! The T-4 was a fresh rebuild, however ( I really hate this part), the 914 was parked out side, and the #3 cylinder was COMPLETELY full of water, to the point that the jug and piston are siezed. So, I figure that I am going to be rejugging it, along with a new set of lifters, as the old ones fell out of the bores as I was flip-floping the motor around to tear it down to see "why" it wouldn't turn over. sigh...
As for the Bug being a Super, I am allready planning on swapping the pan out, verses just chopping out the struts, as I "tinker" for the local VW guy that is around the corner from my house, like maybe 300'. I have researched the Supers pretty hard, and the strut front end seems to be the "weak point", so that has got to go since I ride out in the woods, creeks and fields ALOT, including launching over said creeks at times. I am really looking forward to building this thing, so if I ask what seems like an obvious thing, please bear with me. Marty is not familiar with either the Superbeetles, OR the T-4 engines, so this is going to be entertaining... Oh, my wife says "hi" and is bugging me to go out and work on her rail some, 1641, 4.36 R&P T1 tranny, mostly street....

I'll be able to get some pictures on tomorrow, after I finish putting the truck back together. The timing chain took a dump, and since it is the MAIN vehicle, it kind of took priority... I am mostly done with the reassembly, so I hopefully will have most of the day to tinker on my Baja. ( Photobucket works here, right? )

Okay. Here are a few pictures of my Baja for now, and a couple of shots of some of the bugs that we have worked on over at Marty's shop, my wifes' rail and mine, and I can even post up a couple of shots of what the wheeling is like around here if anybody wants to see...

I got it allready wacked in the back, plus the rear 'glass pieces also, but one of the fenders is snapped in 1/2, so I get to fix that. Anybody interested in a "how to" on repairing a snapped fender? I still need to get some pictures of the rear pieces anyways...

Oh, here are a few shots of my T-4 motor that I got that had the standing water in the #3 cylinder. I am still up in the air on wether to rebuild it or not... the parts are like, "stupid dumb" on how much $$$$ they cost. Surprised

Here are a couple of shots of our rails that are under construction:

And a few of some of the most recent Bugs that we have done over at the shop:

This one is a FULL resto, allthough, personally,I wouldn't have spent the $$$ on it like this guy has. Last time that we totaled up the bill, it was up to almost $14,000. WHO spends that kind of jack on a bug? seriously?

One of the local Shriners' cars:

yeah, it really IS that cut down...

Hopefully, these will give ya'll some thing to look at for awhile, as I have to go do an engine swap in Jeep Commanche for a friend of mine so that he will give me the Geo Tracker that is sitting in the corner of the garage waiting for someone to love it enough to put in a new fuel pump ($$$). Oh, well...

Later.

Nah, not yet... the white buggy is waiting for the block to get back from the machine shop, and then built, the green one is a long term project as I want to build up a monster hill climber out of it and the Baja just recently came to stay with us. I need to replace the floors in it, replace the interior and rewire it, plus new rubber for the glass instead of the Ducttape holding the rear window in. I have all ready blocked off the heater ducts with plates to cover the fiberglass ducts coming into the shell.
I am going to go ahead and start a build thread for the Baja, so feel free to check in once in awhile. Smile
