Hey all, great resource here.

My buddy's got a '72 super beetle that we're lookin to baja. Rebuilt 1600cc engine. It'll be a pismo dune and mud machine.

It's crap, but we've got the resources to make it work. He's got a shop with a lift, the tools, the scrap, etc. What we need to know is:
-What needs to be done as far as a suspension goes, or what's the best budget route for a sand machine?

I'm sure I'll have other questions, but I don't want to wear out the "newbie" excuse in just one post.

Any input's appreciated, especially detailed info or pics.

Thanks.

Welcome!! It will be tougher for you to make a Baja out of a super but it can be done.

Before you start you should replace the super with a normal beatle. Suppers are too much work and most body kits do not fit them. Talk to bug zilla I bet he can find you somthing that weould be much better for you to use.

Supers have astrut front end that dosent hold up well in off road situations and the front is almost impossible to lift but, if you can weld you could cut the front of the pan off and weld a link pin frame on.

Welcome! There is a lot of info on this site and everyone is willing to help answer your questions.

If you are interested in starting with a non-Super bug, I have a 1969 and 1977 for sale. Check in the "For sale" area on this site.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Jake

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

I found a fiber body for it, so there's no problem there.

As far as the suspension goes, could someone elaborate on the front end of the super?

And thanks for the pics, bigbadbruin.

Supers have strut front-end (too stiff for off road and hard to raise) and standards use a torsion bar front-end.

It's a little more involved than that, but it is the simplest explaination.

I'm sorry if you look closely the guy had the ideal if you look at the the front end on that one on its side with the meaty fella. the the right of his right hand ... it's a superbeatle that was converted to a ball joint front end.

Had the right idea but not strong enough. obviously he won.......

so where did you put all the parts off of that beetle? new toy in the mixer?
