I've been trying to get my 71 to be reliable before I start doing the cosmetic work. For awhile I couldn't even get it started but found out I had wired the distributor and coil backwards. It toasted the pertronix so I went back to points. Then I had an issue where it was running like crap and occasionally would stall, that was found to be a bad vent for the tank. The last time there was so much pressure I had to pry the cap off with my fingers.
The third issue and hopefully the last is sometimes when it is hot either from driving or the Az heat it will turn over for a half to a sec and stop. If I hold the key it will try to engage the starter but sounds like its going to rip the teeth right off the starter. If I turn the key off and then back on I can get another half to a full second and try again. The last time it took about 20 minutes to start. I've replaced the electric portion of the ignition switch, coil, points, rotor, and re-splice any bad looking wires. I dont know if this is related but the distributor has melted the plug that goes through the housing for the points wire.
Any suggestions would be very appreciated

Thanks,
Bob

Have you set the timing lately? if it is way over-advanced it will make a sound as if it is grinding the flywheel because the next cylinder is firing before it should

right now the timing has been set pretty much by ear. my crank pulley has no markings on it. the grinding comes from holding the key on after it stops turning over. With the key held to the start position for an extra two to three seconds you hear the starter teeth try to engage again
