I'm not a welder but would like to learn so I can do some of my own fabrication (very limited), trailer work, etc., not planning on making it a vocation. Just so I can fix some of my own stuff.

Which is easier to learn, MIG or TIG? Which is better?

Without going to community college, any good place that teaches the basics?

MIG welding is the easiest to pick up. TIG, from what I've heard, is better

Honestly I wouldn't go spend the money on a class. Have someone who knows how to weld come help you out for a few hours and just weld every piece of scrap metal you have until you got it down, then weld some more haha

That's what I did anyways and look how my welds turned out...

just takes practice practice practice

Maricopa County Skill Center is the cheapest and has two very good experienced instructors. I believe Hobart and Miller have videos and HP Books has a book. Welding is a talent that needs lots of practice.

I'd practice with some sheet metal you may have lying around. Check youtube, there's bound to be good how to videos. I've been shopping around for a new welder and many Samba users recommended the Hobart Handler 140 mig welder. It's reasonably priced and the pictures a user posted of welds he made were pretty clean. I took a class for welding at a tech college in my area. I spent 8 hours a day running a bead left to right, up and down (etc) on scrap metal and that was the best way to get the hang of it. If you do't already have a welder, save your pennies and buy something of decent quality... or you'll be like me regretting that you didn't Smile

From what I have read, TIG can make some very nice looking welds that are not as strong as chewing gum. MIG will not be as pretty but easier to make strong when starting out. So it was recommended to me to start w/MIG and when accomplished learn TIG. I bought a decent MIG but have yet to try it out as I want to learn like you.

Penetration is key! Here is a site I found:

www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/

Might offer some insight.

TIG is super hard, but is nice because you can weld more materials such as stainless, and aluminum. I've heard people claim they can weld those with MIG, or have found some special wire that will, but TIG is the right way to do it. For general fabrication purposes MIG is probably the way to go. It's easier, cheaper and with practice you can make pretty good looking welds.

Yes, you will find yourself spending more time prepping your weld area then actually welding. You should be welding clean metal to clean metal. Use a wire brush or wire wheel to clear off any paint or rust. Any foreign things like rust or paint within the metal will result in a weak weld. After each weld chip away the slag with a slag hammer (they're cheap) and clean what is left with the wire brush again (wire wheel at this point would be excessive in most cases. It's best for initial prep). Patience and practice, over and over. Scrap metal is best until you get the feel for it.

Been lookin' and I'm leaning towards the Hobart Handler 140 model. Should be enough for what I want to do. Then, figure out how to use it.

Billy: thanks for that link. Pretty informative.

I also found the Millerwelds.com site good too.

It will work fine. My frame machine was made with a 125 amp welder. 1/2" plate welded to a section of railroad rail.

Here's a definite noob question:

When welding on a rail (or any vehicle for that matter), do you need to disconnect the battery? Since you need to attach the clamp on the welder somewhere on bare metal on the frame/body, would the the voltage/amperage from the MIG welder cause any damage to the electricals/wiring?

It won't hurt Pertronix and voltage regulators. It should be removed since battery acid gas is very explosive. Matco sells a electronics protector that hooks to the battery that allows welding on the new cars with many voltage sensitive control modules thast woluld be ruined by welding.

I don't know if you necessarily have to but if its in question, it couldn't hurt to do.
