I need some guidance on removing the ball joints from the torsion arms. Shes a 69, cut and turned. Ive got a pickle fork and quite a few hammers. I was able to remove one ball joint from the back of the brake assembly, but not the lower one.

AND, I supposedly have a "bent trailing arm" in the rear. Any help on properly diagnosing that would be great...

Never dealt with the vw 'double ball joint' front end- just used to the american stuff-

No suggestions for the front end, but if you have a bent trailing arm in the rear, it should be easily noticeable. Which one is apparently bent? Compare it to the other prospectively 'unbent' one and note any differences. Does the rear seem to be handling different under driving conditions? How?

Unfortunatley she rode like crap before AND after this apparent bending occurred. A bent trailing arm is just Theory B. Theory A was a bent stub axle, but that turned out to be straight (or at least it was to my untrained eye).

Sure. Although I did stare at it for a solid hour or so with a tape measure. The easiest way to see whats wrong is with the tire on, simply because its so pronounced (about 6-8 degrees of positive camber).

Ill take some today or tomorow if its not raining.

Ya there should be no camber if it is a 69, it should be IRS (I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure IRS started in 1968 on the autostick transmission models).

What did you do that you think bent it?

Stock trailing arms are not the toughest ever but you really gotta romp on them to make them bend.

Did you try loosening the spring plate bolts? I was reading a little while ago on here someone else was having positive camber issues with their IRS set up and it just ended up being the spring plates were out of line

Interesting. I Came back from san Felipe and noticed wuite alot of positve camber. Although I did ride her a little rough, at first I thought i bent the Stub axle. After i dismantled it, I asked the forums, and ive been trying to figure out if i could tell if the trailing arm was bent.

SO, would you happen to have that link to that page on the spring plates?

My bad, I found the posts and I think it was an issue with the 3x3 trailing arms not lining up with the spring plates, could still be the issue though.

Also make sure your torsion housing isn't bent

could be, hopefully its something simple like spring plates out of place or just a trailing arm that needs to be replaced
