underneath the trunk on my 71 standard I have a black canister that sits on the left side. Their are 1/8 in hoses going from the tank and the fuel overflow hose to it. Air will not go in through the canister. Is this a charcoal canister for the fuel vapors and do I need it. When I pull the cap off the tank it has a lot of pressure behind it and I was wondering if this could have something to do with it.

That's just an emissions filter. I had one on my '74 but trashed it.

From a post on the Samba:

"The canister is there for emissions purposes...having a working system really has no affect on engine performance, and prevents raw gas fumes from venting to the atmosphere."

I'm really not sure how you would do it to retain the stock tank- I replaced my tank with an after market one and just ran fuel hose straight from the tank to solid fuel line, nothing else.

I used on my '66 a canister from a '85 Rx7 that I parted out. Took all the fuel smell out of driving it. Smile

yes, and get rid of all the small lines, (1/4"ish), except the vent hose.
which is on the left front of the tank. originally it goes to a hardline, behind the right front tire, under the pan, then to the rear of the car. usually that line is plugged. if you cant unplug it, just vent it under the car somewhere.

I could find the back end but haven't found the front end of the hardline. It's now vented under neath and seems to be a lot better. no prying off the fuel cap.
Thanks for your help
