So... I have been reading through the threads, trying to learn about Bajas. I know two things about Bajas...
1) I want one.
2) it has to be 1966 or older because I do not want to ever deal with emissions.

The trick is now learning all the stuff that goes with it.... link pin, ball joint, IRS, 002,009, bus trans, dual port, swing axle, 091 trans, and what the hell is a Samba?

I was thinking about just having something to drive when the weather is nice...and go rummaging around in the desert (Four Peaks area) when feeling froggy. Does the local community college offer a course in VW's

Welcome to AzBaja.com!

You can learn quite a bit on here as well as some other VW websites.

Samba is a Brazilian musical and dance style. But for us, Samba is another good VW website:
TheSamba.com

I'm not aware of any school that teaches aircooled VW mechanics. It's all OJT nowadays.

Your best spend will be to buy Baja Bugs and Buggies by Jeff Hibbard. To start the book will answer all your questions except what is a Samba. www.thesamba.com/vw/ is a website that you may find to be helpful on anything VW.
I prefer the friendlier www.shoptalkforums.com/

The emission test is no big deal. Both my 69 Baja and my 69 Ford Falcon pass.

BUT, there's something to be said for NEVER having to go wait in that line- EVER. I dig sending $15 in each year and just getting my tags in the mail.

Welcome to AZBAJA. 340 days a year in AZ are perfect for offroading. The other 25 are ok. I have already been about 4000 miles on/off road this year.

The one thing I have noticed is that VW people are "fanatically friendly"....which is nice. I have made the decision that if I find a baja for sale I will see if one of you guys will go with me to look at it and make sure it is worth the $$. When it comes to buying things, I am the kind of person that wants to pay a fair price, I dont want to overpay, and I do not want to take advantage of someone......if that makes sense. Thanks for the friendly comments..
