on a single port engine, there are tubes running from the intake to the exhaust, i think they are called preheater tubes? any idea what these are for? are they necessary? i am switching to a different exhaust system, and the new one doesnt have the flanges

They are for preheating the intake manifold. If you don't have them you will find your car running really bad in the lower RPM's when it's cold outside because the intake will basically freeze over and it won't be burning all of the gas.

I assume your switching to a Baja exhaust or something of the sort, and it's an easy fix with those.
Just pick up some of these...
www.chircoestore.com/c...ts_id=2934

drill small holes in them

then go to a local metal place and pick up some small tubing, cut your exhaust and weld those small tubes to it. Then weld the drilled block off plates to the tubes.

Then you can just use your old heat riser tubes with your new exhaust Cool

clear as mud? Laughing

You can leave them off if you want. I don't have mine on and I have a single carb. But I live in So Cal so it's rarely cold here

I will do it one day...
