Post Post subject: Tow Bar Questions

I have a "T-trailer" for towing my rail. I don't like it. It's a PITA to load and unload it. My last rail had a tow bar that had a plate welded to it that you bolted to the front beam via the 4 holes there. Once bolted up when you connected the hitch to the tow vehicle, the front tires were off the ground about 8-12 inches. The tow bars I see now allow the front tires to remain on the ground. I'm having a hard time grasping how the front tires don't turn in the wrong direction when towing. Everywhere I've read about these tow bars say to not lock the steering wheel so the wheels are free turning. What keeps the tires from turning when towing and going around curves/making a sharp turn?

If Daryl sees this, can you weld up a hitch with a plate like I described above?

I was thinking of buying a regular flat trailer but the tow bar is definitely a cheaper alternative. Would there be any problem using a tow bar to tow a rail from Mesa up to the Rim and back?

Edit: I read a message on Samba and the poster stated to "never, never" go in reverse with one of these tow bars. Any truth to that comment?

i've towed my baja behind a full size chevy truck up and down the highway, from gilbert to phx to queen creek and back, never had any problems, even on the highway. the towbar hooks straight up to your beam and your tires just follow whatever you're doing, i've never had them, or heard of them, shooting off in random directions, they're actually a pretty good design.

hope this helps Cool

I've towed my Baja a couple thousand miles behind my motorhome with no problem. The caster in the suspension makes the wheels track correctly, think grocery basket. Yes, you have to have the steering unlocked. My motorhome has a very large overhang from the rear axle to the hitch and on sharp turns you can really see the wheels on the Baja working.
If your rail has a beam front end then the Tow Bar from Chirco will hook right up to the bottom tube.

if your worried about it you could always do something like this...

that way you can break half of your rail and still be able to tow it home haha Laughing

Ha!

Sometimes the way I drive, that is quite a possibility.

I've towed a few VW's with my drag behind type tow bar with no issues. The front wheels follow along no problem. The only issue is backing up. That's when the front wheels go any direction and lock into place.

The other thing to consider with the standard VW tow bars is to have the horizontal tubes as parallel (sp) to the ground as possible. This was mentioned by Lotrat on other forums and makes a lot of sense. In other words, get a drop ball mount to the tubes are flat when parked on flat ground.

I've seen people towing with their steering wheel locked. You can see and hear the miles getting scrubed off their tires as they go down the road. You can't back up with a tow bar or a tow dolly. A small trailer is nice because you can also bring home your next project on it.

I prefer my T trailer over my tow bar but the rail no longer fits it. I just drive mine up the rear tires fall into a cup shaped area just as the beam dead ends into a plate that has a pin to lock it in place. Tow Bars are fine but you can not back it up and if you leave the rail in gear you can kiss the engine and transaxle goodby.

I decided I will look for a flatbed trailer. 7' X 14' single axle with side rails and rear ramp. Man, trailers are expensive!

Just add a floor to your T trailer.
