If you use a stinger it will need a spark arrestor. If you have a big license plate and a muffler you do not need a spark arrestor. There is a decibel rule in any national forest.

Laughing hee hee, well i run a big plate on my bug since it's my daily driver, BUT, i have a stinger out the back with no baffle, no arrestor, straight noise. even talked to a nice ranger lady one time i was there, she didn't say anything about it. sometimes people confuse my tractor exhaust flapper for an arrestor though i dunno haha. i always hit the rolls with what i got, if i get stopped, i'll fix whatever they want fixed Razz

to answere some of your questions guys: Here's what i have always run at the rolls -

No skid plates
B/J front end
Swing rear
Stinger (unbaffled)
No spark arrestor
my engine is a 1641DP but Daryll always runs his rail with a 1600SP and does more than ok.

i got 31" rear tires
27" front tires

cage around my engine/tube bumper (handy for getting pushed out of sand)

and i've always done fine at The Rolls i'm going to be stopping by the ranger station today to see if i can get everyone a map for this trip incase anyone decides to run off and become a lost child Laughing

RULES OF THE TRIP:
bring water bring water bring water! can't say that enough, you gotta stay hydrated! Cool

good idea to bring a fire extinguisher, every car should have one, (not a requirement)

first aid kits are a good idea

no reckless driving, we don't want a fender bender in the middle of the desert. (meaning don't follow too close or bump anyone, or cut off people, last night run we had a guy threw his truck sideways on the side of Ellsworth on the way to bulldog canyon showing off, none of that please. pretty much the go-kart rules from any carnival you've ever been to) Laughing

if it's hot, a cold wet towel will be your best friend, just an FYI, coolers with ice water and towels are sweet in the desert heat.

Good things to have for your baja: spare pully belt, tow rope, spare dist cap/rotor/points, anything you could change on the fly with or without tools that may break along the journey.

that should about cover it, pretty much HAVE FUN! now let's go play in the dirt Twisted Evil

I'm hopefully still going to be able to make the trip I started, lol. I should have the new coilovers in a couple days and Don is selling me a set of heads to replace my messed up ones.

Perri:
While your at the Mesa ranger station you can ask how much the fine for running an open exhaust is. If you get a ticket thats what you'll have to pay on top of making it quiet. I doubt there will be any LEOs out there Friday so it may well be a moot point.
As for skid plates it is not a good idea to say one does not need a skid plate at The Rolls. You may only drive where you don't need one but it is better to have it and never need it than not have it and need it. You can build and install a skid plate for less than $50. A lot cheaper than changing a cracked engine case. Even in a sand wash an exposed engine case can get damaged.

And YES leave a lot of room behind you and the next person. First person to an intersection stops and waits for the next person. Go check all your nuts and bolts before this run.

well they didn't have any maps... i did get my Bulldog Canyon pass though, whatever it's called, the free one that gives you the gate lock codes for the year.

and i get what you're saying Perri, i'm not telling anyone to go run without skid plates, i'm just saying that if you don't have them, don't consider yourself out of the trip, you're still capeable of having fun.

What passes are required to be in that area for a street legal vehicle? If any are required where do you get them?

You only need a Bull Dog Canyon Pass for Bull Dog Canyon. They are free, we can stop and get them before heading to the The Rolls.. If you want to use improved facilities a Tonto Pass is required. The Rolls and Bull dog Canyon are not not an improved facility.

Preston is right you can pick trails that do not need a skid plate.

It's looking better for me making this trip. The heads I got from Don might already be cut for 90.5 cylinders. If that's the case my motor can go back together this week with the new 36mm Dellorto I got for it.

I'm still up in the air. The darn shock body on one of the coil overs needs to be machined down in a lathe a couple thousandths for the rings and slider to fit over it. Lee from Raceshock should get it done and to Daryll on Thursday. So its gonna be close!
