I'M LEGAL!!! I'm so stoked. It was a Non-Use Certificate that I had to sign. Initially the lady said I needed my actual insurance cards instead of what I printed from the internet, but she was able to add the info anyways.

So, Hope to see you guys around town, maybe I'll come down to kirks again sometime.

Update:
Well after much screwing around with my Progressive, I decided to dig through my junk piles and found a PICT 34-3. Rebuilt it and it is so far satisfactory, however I just can't get rid of my low oil pressure issue.

Tomorrow, I'm pulling the oil pressure relief valve to verify it isn't stuck or something and measure the spring. I have the how to keep your VW alive and other books for reference. I'll also do a valve adjustment and verify the timing again. Runs good otherwise so it can't be serious. I looked at the gears for the oil pump and they look good, as well as the cover plate.

I changed from 10-30 to 20-50 today and it helped very little.

I also modified my setup from aftermarket cooler and filter to the newer style shroud courtesy of Eric and cooler. Didn't solve my pressure issues but I found my aftermarket cooler was pretty trashed somehow and I'm glad I made the change.

I'll update again soon, I hope. I'm unemployed and have plenty of time to work on the Baja, just little money so I have to make it work from my junk piles or just decide to sell it, which is the last resort. I'm paid up through Oct for insurance, so I'll keep it at minimum till then.

BTW - I'll never buy another BAP carb rebuild kit, shotty workmanship and also the float valve stuck closed and I had to push it a block back home. Then it stuck open and dumped fuel everywhere and filled the throttle body. Not good on the cylinders. Ended up using the original that I was about to throw in the trash. Rolling Eyes

Later.

I just swapped back to my Weber 32/36 Progressive after chasing flat spots and poor hot idle as well as dieing while stopping. If you weren't constantly bliping the throttle it would die. Not to mention very low oil pressure.

Discovered that I must have had a bad vacuum leak on 1-2 because the metal DP gasket wasn't crushed on one side. Also discovered this is why I was having problems with the Weber. I couldn't get gaskets from BAP they were out!!! So I made my own from some cork gasket material. Don't know how long it'll hold up, but for now its working.

So now after getting my Weber going, I wonder if my peticular 34 Pict-3 carb might have been fine with the 009 if it didn't have a major vacuum leak. I'll keep it around someday to learn all over again why I wasn't using it. Smile I'll just watch for vacuum leaks from now on. A lot of the Weber's problems were also caused by my rebuilding it and putting a BB sized ball in the hole where the Mechanical Pump nozzle bolts on. The Ball was plugging the jet and causing it to stumble horribly. I almost bought a new diaphram and started making modifications. Glad I tracked the problem down first.

Drove it about 50 miles on the freeways and by the time I got home it was making a ton of racket, the noisy generator bearing was completely gone. Spent the rest of the day trying to free a doner from an engine in the backyard and building one good one from two. Happy to report that it was a sucess and I'll have to drive it some more to know how long it'll last. I found bearings on Chirco for about $6 and I trust them more than BAP so I'll probably get one coming.

So does anyone have a quiet exhaust they'd like to trade for the dual exhaust? Just way too loud for me. Also makes everyone look at me.
Thanks and I look forward to meeting up some time.

OK, after driving to Eric's without having the ability to idle again. I pulled the jet and sure enough it was plugged, also through some research discovered that I had a sticking powervalve. Cleaned both with carb cleaner and reassembled. Idles great and has even less of a flat spot/hesitation.

Almost there, but totally driveable. Also my brakes work great, would have been crunched up pretty good yesterday if they didn't.

Hoping to make the run on the 16th.

Made the Run, but now have a list of to-do's after loosing the right Rear wheel from stripping the too short lug studs out. We were able to put on the spare which was smaller with a thinner wheel. The studs engaged just enough to get us home.

Also found I dinged my exhaust and need to fix the fiberglass on the right rear.

Other than that, it ran great.

Well almost two years later and I've added studs to the drums to never lose a wheel again!

I also discovered when I put on dual exhaust that the 3/4 head was not firing for the most part. (I was driving basically on the 1/2 cylinders)

I chased that problem for so long... I finally put a head on it that works and tuned/timed the engine and it runs perfectly so far. The true test is getting it legal and back on the road again.

I found some fiberglass rears from a guy in Surprise off CL and will have to put those on. Lights need replaced from the Hail storm we had that October. My rubbers for the windows are extremely dried out so I'm afraid I'll lose the glass if I drive it fast right now, so that'll have to be done too.

Here's a Video of it running on a cold start with no choke. Very Happy

My Baja Running again
