Hello, I am extremely new to all things Baja Bug. I just bought a 66 and am trying to figure out some basics before planning it all out.

I see some people w/ a 1 pc front end use the round fuel tanks w/o a lot of bracing from the footwell to the beam and other cars w/x-braces taking up the entire front. These are the only options? Fuel cell in back seat area and x-brace or round tank and less braces? Strong enough?

Thank you for your time and opinions.

the floor pan of the VW is like a big go kart, the body is not a major part of the suport structure. But once you get to the point were you will real abuse the car you need to start adding cross bracing cages etc. The floor pan will not hold up to the kind of abuse that a race buggie will see but it will do ok for a weekender.

Thank you for your input. Do most of you go with the pre-made beam to body supports ie..chirco's and round tanks? Or with custom bracing?

i think that it all depends on what you want to do with your car. if you want to do alot of offroading then do the bracing, but if it is a daily driver and you just take it offroad for fun on the weekends, then i would just do what is cheaper.

As long as the terain isnt covered with many big boulders you'll probably have no problems without beam braces. But it never hurts to be safe.

Here's a thought take a look before you cut. you can still have a one piece front end with out cuttin the tank seat off. Then use a tank from a 67 and earlier and still have a sending unit.

You can also do what I did. I used the round aluminum tank, and cut a hole in the top, and drilled & tapped the holes and put a sending unit in it. Just use the rubber gasket to mark the holes.
