Ok, So I'm another one that has been on the site viewing/learning for a few weeks.
I have had a bug, type 1, for almost 3 years with the goal of restoring. I actually sold it to my bother for a year and he let it sit. I got it back a month ago and decided to do a body off restore. The bug itself I think is worthy of a full street restore but I miss my off roading. Have always lived in the mountains or at beaches and really want to get back off the pavement. I'm not going to be a racer or extreme off roader. Just moderate sand/mud trails. Mostly weekend trips thru some state and national forest types of trails. I love the outdoors and the best fishing/hunting spots are where others can't go.

So I have torn down the 'Doom Buggy' and even managed to get the pans out. I ordered the Master Series kit today to do the frame and have new pans that I hope to weld in this weekend. I have a sand blaster so will strip down to bare metal. I am not a high dollar person but firmly believe that doing it right the 1st time is the only way to go.

I have the book, Baja Bugs & Buggies, and have read cover to cover. Some good idea's and more on this site.

1st newbie question…what tool does it take to get the bolts out of the axles where it connects to the trans-axle and wheels? I use a metric alan wrench and got the 1st 2 out easily. The next 2 stripped. When I looked closer it appears to be a 12 point torques <sp> or something. Don't want to strip any more as my vice-grips won't get out the 2 so don't want to have to cut them out.

Oh yea, 72 Type 1, no motor. Live in central Florida.

Thanks ahead of time , this site has been great!!!

Haven't figured out how to post pics yet since my photo's are not on a public web site. Tried reading help but it implies I can't upload one.

You got the body and the pan off. Good start. Looks like you have a project to keep you busy for awhile. Keep us updated as you go.

Wish I had a garage to do a project....

welcome to AZBAJA. You need a 12 point bit. Stahwille and Hazet make the best ones. Use vise grips or an air chisel to loosen overtightened or stripped ones.

Yea I finally tracked down the 8mm triple square bit and got the axles our. Struggled with the axle nuts but finally it is totally disassembled. There is nothing left that will come off. Managed to sand blast the beast yesterday so will start this week on the painting process.
Have Capt Lee's metal prep as 1st step, 2 coats of the silver rust sealer and then the flat black top coat.
Am I missing anything?
Any suggestions on how to treat the inside of the tube? There is a lot of rust in there. I have blown out and vacuumed best I can. Was thinking about cutting a couple of access holes, clean best I can then use the metal prep and sealer in there.

Oh yea, one last part to get off, the rear transmission mount. Is that a 20mm bolt? Haven't found a socket yet but heading to sears later today.
