I'm a 53 year old kid from Canton, Ohio. My real name is Gary Staats and I found AzBaja by surfing the web for VW info. This is my second Baja Bug but the meaniest by far. I love to rip up the streets. I play hrad but not well with others...lol. My question is : how can I find out the year of my 1915cc? I also posted some other questions as to how I would go about putting a bus 091 trans in this 72 or I would be better off with something else. It has a lot of HP and RPMs
Thank you all,
Gary AKA BugLife

Welcome to the forums, BugLife!

Good, I'm not the only 50ish guy on here Very Happy

Look just below your alternator/generator stand as there should be a number stamped just below it. Look it up online or in VW book (or you can post it here). Lot of good info and good folks here.

Welcome Buglife. I live in Massillon and am waiting for the day that I score a bug to baja build. Maybe we can get together some time. I'd love to take a look at yours. Please post up some pics if you can. By the way I'm not far from 50 myself. I'm 47. It's good to know that us older guys still like to play with our cars.

Thank you Major Rickman, I also see that the No.s on the origial motor are very close. I still have the motor that came with the car and it runs fine. I did take the 1.25 rockers for another motor. And for you Grunt, I'd love for you to come by and check the Bug out. I keep it( in )my shop...lol. never been in mud and never been in salt. Come by Grunt, we can go for ride on the back wheels...lol for real. And Trailrail, I have never had this car off road. The car is very clean. Most, if not all parts and machine work were bought and/or done by and/or through LA Products on Coply Rd. in Akron, Ohio. I have posted some photos on this site. I will post more soon as get a cheep camra. All my photos are too large to post. However I have many posted on "myspace.com" search Gary Staats, 53 in Canton, ohio. tons of photos from the build up. Thanks to all. This is a great site and full of good people. Grunt, feel free to call: (330)949-0964 any time. God Bless You All,

Welcome to the site Bug Life,

First off, you are only using about 30% of the fun that great looking Baja is capable of giving you... Sad

Dirt and mud wash off... especially when there is allot of wax on the paint and chrome... Laughing

I've had mine out on the trails in poring rain for hours (having a ball).. A hose and in extreme cases..., The Power Washer, she's ready to go to and cruse to the ice cream shop... Smile

The best part mama loves it... So, spending $$ she's OK with it... LOL Wink

But all BS-ing aside, you do have a great looking Baja...
Good Work... Very Happy
Bring it up to Michigan and we will break it in on some good easy trails... Rolling Eyes

Have a set of slicks I'll put on if I get a trans that will hold up. Ware in Mich.? I lived in Detroit and have family in Travers City. Have a good Day and thank you for the complament on my Baja. I love it.

We live in Highland... But have a place in St Helen... Some of the best trails in the state... All the way up to Grayling... West to Silver Lake... East to Alpena..

We have put on 1000-ish miles on The Cow Bug (80% off road) each of the last two years...
Like I keep telling everyone... If mama likes it... Laughing Wink

There are some "Loose" plans for some get togethers this summer... A few guys (about 20) did it last year with out much planning and had a ball... We didn't make it, but we will this year for sure...

There was also the 1st. ever organized "Quad / 4 Wheeler" weekend in St. Helen last summer... Over 200 registered... Over 1,000 showed up...

I would really like to come but I have no trailor and I'm not sure about driving this Baja that far. Never gave me any problems but the car is really jumpy and lugs in 4th unless I run around 80 to 90 MPR The power really turns on at 4500 R's. It red lines at like 7500 or so. Plus it only gets around 7 MPG and refuses to run on pump gas. I do have the 1600 DP, could swap the motor. I'm hoping to get another trans. Maybe a smaller tire might make a differance?. As it is Lucky, I break the hearts of folks with built 5.0's. The R's really come up fast and pins you to the seat. When the streets are hot it does pull the wheels in 1st & 2nd. Think it is trail-ready? And my woman is scared of it, she seen it doing wheelies..lol and I had to go and whip a Vett with her in the car...lol. My buddy runs 12's and his car isin't build up as much as mine. I have 10.05:1 Pistons and a much biger cam. You have a good day and keep me posted on the haps incase I can make it up there.
