Hey guys, thought I'd finally talk. I've been lurking the forums for a little while now looking at posts I thought were interesting and have learned a lot but I am completely green to auto mechanics, the most work I've ever done on a car was change the oil filter. Anyway, why I'm posting now is because I realized I have absolutely no tools to use when I get my bug (hopefully soon) and I was wondering, where should I start?

You may have seen this before but a good book (a must have if your new to working on cars and your bug is somewhat stock) is 'how to keep your volkswagen alive' or what we call the idiots book. it is invaluable as it will explain almost every system on your bug and how to troubleshoot step by step, and it even has a section on what tools you need for what jobs. You can usually find a link to amazon.com on the home page or the shopping section to get one used or new...
it is well worth the price.

welcome!!

-Brett

Welcome to the forums, Nheriford!

Ditto on getting your hands on the "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" book.

There's a lot of good info here too and some very knowledgeable people here to help with questions you may have.

Ok thanks a lot guys, so far I've picked up three books: Baja Bugs and Buggies, How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive, and now the official repair manual for 1970-1979

Good now your ready. If you could a parts car is a great place to start stripping the parts for spares. Special tools are minimal. Tach/Dwell meter, volt meter, 3/8 torque wrench, Torque Miester, 0-1" micrometer will get you through most basic tasks.

I recommend a set of metric wrenches by Craftsman (for their warranty). If its one wrench not to misplace, its the 13mm- you'll probably end up using it a lot Very Happy
