Hello, I am new here, but have come here for months to lurk and get info. I don't have a baja yet, but have been into them since high school. I'm looking at getting one again and have some questions.
I'm looking at a 58 with a 1600 eng, bus trans and gear reduction hubs and he says a bus front end. I did notice that it has bolt in frt shock towers, is this a good way to gain height and travel or was this the old way of doing things? Also a question on the bus trans. What is the point of the gear reduction at the hubs and is this a good trans to have in a 58? Is this hub set up good for baja's, would seem that it would be more to worry about and more to fail. I'm at work now but will try to post pics to support my questions, but thanks to anyone in advance for answers.

Good question.

I have them on my rail but really don't know what advantage or disadvantage they are.

The PO told me that it really gives it some pulling power for climbing which I like.

But for the original purpose and off-road applications, I'm pretty much at a loss to answer that for ya.

Anyone?

It adds torque and ground clearance. It is great for lower speed exploring.

I have been told that the gear reduction was set up in the bus because the they were much heavier and needed that extra low end torque to get moving verse a bug of similar power. the same friend with that type of trans on his rail told me the huge plus of these trans are that normally in sand off a hard start the tires will dig in as the back in squats. I was told these trans lift the back end up getting better weight distribution and wont dig in the sand as bad.

I think the key is the the The Ring and Pinion needed to lower the gear ration for a bus would not fit into the Transaxle of that time. So I'm sure the VW folks looked at ways to lower the gear ration with out building an entire new transaxle. Like most tractors and some trucks there was either gears at the Hubs(Tractor) extra add on transmission in Trucks. VW just picked the way of the tractor. Later on transaxle was replaced with a new Transxle. I'm sure it was all about cost saving in a factory and retooling for another transaxle. Huge money I'm sure. Gear reduction is simple and not much needed to do it.

I'm speculating on the but I'm sure it was some sort of money thing.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Just to expand on it a little. Does it tend to get contaminated by sand or other debris, or is it very sealed and we just change fluid every now and then? Is this what helps it not have the cambered rear tires? Is the set up basically like a swing arm set up just has hubs out at the wheels?
Anyone have some input on the bolt on front shock towers? Thanks again and I appreciate the info!
