hello there, I am new here, I just had my folks bring up their 1967 bug that they are the original owners of.

we decided to build a baja bug this spring.

one question i have is what body kit is the green bug with the rack have on it......

is there a spec sheet on that one??

Welcome to the site! The green car would be Eric- "AzBaja"- the head honcho himself. I'm not real sure what the body setup is on his, actually. Someone will probably chime in. Some of us (my car included) are running one-piece front ends, widened/cut/turned front beams, longer front trailing arms, and longer/wider rear trailing arms. I believe Eric has most of that stuff as well, but I'm not sure of the exact specs. He's also running a Ford Pinto motor in his.

Post up some pics of your project as you go! Wow- a one-owner '67! Are you SURE you wanna cut it up? That's a hard-to-replace pedigree right there!

yeah, my folks didn't know if they wanted to cut it up, but it's a cali car, so there is almost no rust at all.......

they want something for toolin around back country stuff, and it would be considerably more $$$ to restore it, so we decided to go baja style with it.

it was my first car in high school. here in nevada, you can go wherever you want with a rig like we want to build.

Oh man. All the more reason NOT to cut it up. Most of us have had some sort of body damage that helped with the decision. If your's is in that good of shape, I think I'd look for another to make a Baja. IMO.

So with that said, WELCOME!

I have some where between $3-4k tied up in my Baja and I'm running mostly stock stuff.

maybe i will take some pics and post them....you all can give me the advice to either do the baja or not.

there is just a tad of rust inside under the front hood release in front of the gas tank......really nothing to speak of.

there is a little where the storage area is in the back where the back seat folds up against, but very little.

heck, i mean the fenders you can still see the original green paint, and it's shiny and where the side boards bolt on, which is where i have seen every other bug full of rust, there is none that i can see at all....

i will post pics hopfully tomorrow and you all can tell me what I should do.

my mom drove this car for years every day, so if we just restored it, i am sure she would drive it again.

Mine was a 67 when I started, every thing has been changed. 67 is not the best year to start with, swing axle rear and joint front end. I'm sure people will chime in more. if not I will ad more on Lunch break tonight.

Well, the "general" consensus is that IRS rear ends and Link Pin front ends are the two most desirable setups (and most modifiable) for offroad use. Unfortunately, NO bugs were ever produced that had both of those. Your year, is the ONLY year produced that had NEITHER! How's that for bum luck? Laughing

No biggie though. The front end (thanks to Bugzyla's bolt on link pin conversion beam, is probably the easiest to change. The frame heads on VW pans, although they look pretty much the same, are different for link pin vs. ball joint. Bugzyla makes an link pin beam that bolts to a ball joint frame head (pan). Traditionally, one has had to cut off the frame head and replace with the desired type to convert a front end.

The rear end of a swingaxle bug ('66- earlier (ish)) can also be converted to IRS. This does take a little bit of welding to install the inboard trailing arm pivot brackets to the torsion housing (pan). A jig is required to ensure proper alignment of the pivot brackets.

So, to summarize, '66 and earlier will give you Link Pin front end, but swingaxle rear end. '68-ish and later will give you IRS rear end, but ball joint front end.

Another thing to consider- many off-roaders prefer the "wide 5" wheel lug pattern over the later-model 4-lug. You can always convert this too, but if it's a factor in your decision, the Link Pin cars had the wide 5 lug pattern already.

I think all cars that have a swing axle rear end have 5 bolt drums. So a 67 Ball joint beam is a 5 bolt drum car. I do not think any VW IRS bug came stock with a 5 bolt drumm, all were 4 bolts. Also VW stock Disc brakes are 4 bolt.
