Hey Gang,

New guy here that is also new to Bugs(bought it from an army buddy). I have a 69 Baja that I am going to be fixing up and modifying. I could sure use some input as to the best place to get parts and some advise on what to get. This will be the car my sons drive in high school. They are now 10 and 12 so I have some time, but I drive it to work now. It does need some work. Here is what I am planning:

NEW
windshield, carb, distributor, paint, tires/wheels

Mods
electric heat, AC, fuel injection, possible brake upgrade, LED lighting, better headlights, different exhaust

Needed repairs
brakes, tie rods, oil leak, cap/rotor/wires/plugs, shocks, weatherstripping.

I will probably start with the carb since it leaks pretty good. Even after a rebuild! It is leaking from the butterfly shaft, it is probably a pretty common problem on these carbs. I am looking to get a good used aftermarket for cheap or just stick with a new stock type as I will be switching to FI later on.

Next will be the distributor as I want to get rid of the old points type. There are several on the market, but which one works best and is a good deal? I will do the cap and wires at the same time of course. Maybe a new coil too.

After that I will tackle the weather stripping, new windshield (cracked and water and air leaks), and my electric heat mod. Check it out here: www.valcoelectronics.c..._Code=0114

I have the time, money, and know how to get these done. I would just like to hear some suggestions from you experienced guys out there.

Be seeing you soon

Mike

WELCOME MIKE!

first off, do you have glass coverage on your auto insurance (with no deductable)? thats an easy glass fix Very Happy

parts houses:

BAP IMPORT (PHX)

Karls Kustom (PHX)

Chirco (Tucson) (we prefer Very Happy ) www.chirco.com

watch the for sale section here (AZBAJA.com) for parts too.

carbs are $140 or so for a solex stock.

pick up the PETRONIX ($65) ignition pack, it replaces the points and condensor. needs no adjusting. drop in and roll!

what kind of exhaust does it have now? what are you lookin for?

PLEASE POST PICS Very Happy

disk brake up grades are $400 +/-

stay away from vw after market fuel injection. have a non vw shop customize fi for ya.

what kinda carb is it on there?

what kind head lights are you lookin for?

some weather stripping is $$$$ (as explained by 69BapBaja)

No glass coverage - I'm a cheap bastard! They are cheap at BAP though, and I can do it myself.

I have heard of Karl's, but I havn't been there yet. I will have to check it some day when I am on that side of town. I have Chirco bookmarked now. Haven't checked them out yet though.

I forgot about Pertronix! I guess because I have been thinking of going with a performance ignition system. I have used them in the past on old V-8 cars and they make a big difference.

I don't know what kind of exhaust it is. I had a buddy call my 'tailpipe' a 'stinger'. Is it? Here is a pic:

Wow, I wasn't ready for $400 for disc brakes! Guess I will have to dig out my drum brake tools until I can figure out a cheaper way to go. I put front disc on my 67 stang for just a little over $200 using parts from an old Mercury Comet. Any tricks like this for bugs?

FI will be down the road some. I plan on building my own from spare parts I have laying around. Thats why I wanted a cheap way out for a carb. I have a worn out Pict 28 that leaks pretty bad. I have a line on an NOS for $50 bucks! Hopefully it pans out.

My lights are the close together stock style. They don't work too hot on the freeway. Is there a halogen upgrade for them? Pic:

Weather stripping is $$$? That sucks! I need it bad, everywhere! Doors, windshield, and windows too! The last guy that owned it used clear silicone to seal a leak on the rear window. It looks like crap! And I can see the road through a crack in the front bottom of the passenger door as I am driving. And it is starting to get cold in the mornings!

I really didn't like it when I first bought it. I have never liked German cars, but I needed cheap transportation and an Army buddy needed to get it out of his mother-in-laws driveway.

I am hooked now though. It will be nice when I am done with it.

Karls in Phx is on Indian School and like 41st street (??) pain in the rear to park there too Shocked .

you exhaust is a stinger type. you can stay with that, or try any other version (u bend, etc).

you can pick up halogens for the head lights at v'autoazone, cheaper, and else where. up to $28 each Shocked

weather strippin can be substituted (sometimes) with stick on door weather strippin (depends upon application).

glass is about $50 at BAP. pretty easy to snap in. (unless your the glass guy that did my 59 Laughing ).

heres some disk brake kits. (you could use gia brakes. i priced it that way from v'autozone and it was $400 plus. )

Yep, seen a lot of the crappy black paint. I have the quad color going on though. Some green poking out in the interior with blue over it. Then the 2 colors on the outside.

Say10, I am just north and east of 7th st and Utopia (I am on the map now). I would like to see your bug sometime and pick your brain over a beer. I work night shift though. Most sundays I am awake during the day though. We should hook up.

Darn Chirco pages aren't loading up right now. Was going to check out those brakes. Does that happen a lot?

Damn my one weakness....beer! Sounds good, the kits that Chirco carry are nice. I plan on doing a full disc convesion. They have all the hardware you need and even come with a type 2 (bus) master cylinder. If you check out there project cars link they put them on Dons baja.
