So i was wondering, the more electrical stuff you add the worse your battery is going to fair. so is there any way to help out the electrical system. will adding relays help with the load? What exactly does a relay do? Do they make cap's to help with the load of lights and such, like they do for sound systems? Thanks

A relay is basically an electrically controlled switch, so it won't help much. The best thing to do is upgrade the alternator and battery.

A battery with more CCA(cold cranking amps) can supply more power. A 950 CCA battery has more power than say a 550 CCA battery.

Alternators are rated in watts(power). A 230W alt from a new Dodge diesel is going to put out more power than say a 120W alt from a Toyota Camry.

Caps (capacitors) on the other hand are energy storage devices. They can't supply more energy than they are charged with. They also discharge very quickly. They work for stereo's because they can boost power for a short time and they recharge almost as fast as they disharge. We are talking in the micro second timeframes. Perfect for adding some bass to your favorite Trance songs!

I like the way you think though, you have any other ideas??

relays are just bigger amp switches to make so the little switches on your dash(newer cars) don't have to run so much amperage through them. little switches will literally melt or burn up if you try and push to many amps through them.

It is going to depend on the charging system you have on your engine right now. do your have a alternator or a generator?

if you have a generator you need to get a alternator first then that would be a good start. beef up your charging wires also. cars 40+ years old most likely need a freshning on the alternator wire and new ground leads as well.

also a new battery would probably help!

anytime you can put insulated connectors on all the wires you come across that arent insulated do it.

the stock bug generator barely puts out 35 amps worth of powah, a motorolla alternator can put out close to 60 amps and some can put out close to 80. 60-80 should be enough for a good system and some lights.

I seen it too many times where a person would come in the shop with a 800watt rockford fosgate or some other alt killing machine and the amperage of the amp would suck more than a bug generator could put out, same with hondas and other small cars.

just add up the amperage of your devices and keep it under the alts output.

all in all, go with a NEW bosch alternator at the highest output you can afford.

stay away from relays unless absolutely necassary.

they are on the sand limos and they bite azs. if they get wet, theyre history. they take up precious room too.

Thanks for the input. Im not planning on putting a large system in my baja, and i have a Bosch Alt in it already. i dont know what the amp output is though. it was already on there. The battery is pretty new, but i will look in to getting one with more CCA's. If you guys have any other ideas let me know.

Thanks

another note, pick up the largest battery you can afford. i run an 800 plus cold crankin amp battery. that way there is plenty of crank over even when its weak. Very Happy

If you have cash invest in a Optima red top battery as well as the new alt.If you go to an actual battery store like Batteries Plus (or what ever they have over in Cali) they tend to be cheaper than anywhere else. They have a 3 year warranty and are dry cell. My boss has one in his old Wagoneer and swears by em now.

optimas are nice, but they do die sooner than a standard acid battery.

I have a yellow top optima that sat at the Pep boys I worked at for 2 years then at my house for a year, I have since used it in several different cars and have yet to kill it.

Hi all sorry to hijack but the O of my baja ran relays for everything. I want to clean up the wiring some and was thinking of removing some of them. What do you think is important to have a relay on? The switches seem to be pretty heavy duty. Do you think it would be ok to run the haedlights through a toggle switch, and the brights and KCs throught other switches and remove the relays? I dont think the headlights draw all that many amps.
Thanks
Shawn
