"If you are so inclined to do so,you should use 120ga tubing and seal the welds air tight-add a small 125 psi air compressor and voila" portable dual function item.--harbor freight has such a compressor, mine fits under the rear bench just fine."

I did this with a tube bumper on a Toyota once. It worked great. You are correct though, there was no way to inspect it. If you think there is an issue, you could tap it with a hammer and listen for a change in the sound.

Thanks for all the info. I did not mean to rile the natives. I was just responding in kind (or at least I thought so). The way it would look never crossed my mind. I drive a 99 Corolla every day to work which ranks much higher on the gay-o-meter than a baja with the cage on the outside. I guess I should have been clear that I was looking for opinions on the technical side. I don't care what it looks like. I have never been a poser and never will be. Thanks for posting the picture and pointing out the strength aspect. I do see how it would not be as strong. I am not building a racer, so it may be ok. If in the end I look gay, at least Obama and Bawny Fwank will be there to protect my rights. Razz

Shocked

I have about 20in of travel up front, the rear will have 5x5s and dual shocks the same as the front racerunners. on my exo cage i'm only doing one bar on the side and 2 up the front and down the back. not for rock crawling, but for accessoies and roll over protection becuase how wide my set up is. Just because I know for fact I am going to roll it!!! and so do my friends!! Twisted Evil plus I'M doing an 2.2 ecotec or V6 vtec not sure yet?

I had an exo cage on my landcruiser for a while and hated it. It was always in the way and caused so much windage I couldn't get above 60mph on the highway with a V8. I can't imagine what that would do with a air-cooled motor.

Thanks Mark.

Nothing beats real world expierence. I had not thought about the air resistance. I am ok with a gay looking baja, but a gay looking baja that gets crapy mileage, that is something to think about. Laughing

Why pump compressed air into your roll cage? Even while your riding thru the dez your pumping air thru it?
Thanks

You use it as a compressed air tank, in lieu of actually carrying one onboard the vehicle with you (since bajas have minimal/nonexistent storage space in many cases). Compressor is optional, as you can "charge" it before each trail run, in case you need it during the trip.

Just make sure you have pilot holes from one tube to the next. It will also show you how good your welds are Twisted Evil

WELL..... If one of you would kindly explain to me how the Hell your supposed to post a picture on here, I would give an example (albeit an odd one) of an external cage bug.

Most forums won't let you link pics posted in their forum to different sites, which is what you tried to do above. You have to save the pic to your computer, upload it to a free hosting service like Photobucket, and then use the [img] tags and the link to the pic on photobucket to make it show up. It's a bit tedious the first few times, but the cool thing is you can post it to as many places as you like.

NOTE- Once it's uploaded to photobucket, don't move it around from album to album, or the link(s) will be broken and all anyone will see is red 'x's everywhere you posted it.

Photobucket is free, btw.

Looks like this one is just a bug body on something else's frame.

I don't like the idea PERSONALLY. Do what you want with your car though! Just make sure to post pics so we can all see your handy work.
