Today, I made my first rookie mistake. After dismantling and unscrewing literally everything in sight, I realized that I had to take the engine out of the car to get to the back side of the alternator, which unfortunately I can't do at the moment due to some random circumstances. So, I spent the whole day taking apart my engine just to look at it at put it back together. I've almost got everything back in place but it's freaking cold outside and I needed to come in and warm up. Anyway, my plan to replace the alternator in my bug pretty much was a waste of time. So now I'll just keep on driving with my redneck solution... back up battery in the car at all times and then charge the dead battery in my apartment Laughing

A 36 mm socket and a long 1/2 rachet works if the nut was correctly torqued. If you got the one put on with an 1/2 " impact only the fan shroud with the alt/gen attached needs removing.

You want a challenge VW TOURAG. 30 plus hours to change an alt. Seat comes out to change battery. Another hour. Change the battery ECM does not recognize worn key. VW won't give you the code tow to dealer pay 2 hours @135 per hour to cut and code new key key not included.
The smart flat rate techs change it without removing the engine but only VW techs get the secret code from VOA via satalite.

I'm sure glad I didn't have to do that job Shocked I'm sure I would have managed to turn that 30 hours into 60 with all of my stupid mistakes. Speaking of stupid mistakes, I'm pretty sure I messed up the timing in the process of taking everything apart and putting it back together. I've been reading some how to's about timing but they all require special tools and equipment that I don't have. Is there a short cut farmer solution to timing or is the only way to do it with special strobe lights etc.?

And happy new year to everyone Smile

Watched my front left tire roll away as i continued to drive down a dirt road, IN MEXICO. Not good. Serious oil leak issues; Oil pump, intake pushrod tube on number 1, and some where near the trans all leak some how. High temp, low pressure, high revs.

Took of lights, fenders, Baja-Tail and hood (trunk, whatever). Trying to figure out how to make the hood fit better. Looking for rust with a screwdriver and found to small spots the size of a euro behind the front tires. Firewall is good Smile
So I kind of started and hope to get it ready this spring/summer so I can drive it around Europe.

Installed my new alternator, but ran into a problem. I posted about it in Body and Electric forum. Need some help! Laughing

Problem resolved! Alternator install completed last night. I drove to work this morning WITH headlights, thank you very much. Had to grind the back pulley lip down to clear the alternator. Wish I'd have thought of that before. I ended up getting a used spacer from Karl's yesterday, but it was so thick I'd have had to cut the key in the alternator shaft down shorter, and I didn't want to do that. A few minutes with the grinder and all's well.

I can't believe I actually have an alternator that CHARGES the battery for a change! Laughing

Popped some windows out.
First I wanted to save the sealings but saw they where pretty bad so just cut them. I will do the front screen tommorow and than its sanding time.

The engine sitting in it is from a 1600 from a friend, he thinks my Baja is a enginestand Wink The engine sitting on the left to it is my 1600.

I found two tiny holes...

you should have 2 hole on each side at the low points. this is to help water drain and stop rust, do not fill them in!!!

I took it out to cut pipe at Gold Field Ranch for the USFS. Then since I was there I took it out for a little run today to see if Lower Sycamore, Upper Sycamore, The Rolls and Mesquite Creek were still there.
