hey all- I have a station within 1/2 mile of my house that sells e85 gas...

unleaded 2.56 a gallon e85 is 2.35 a gallon... not a huge deal but curious, anyone know what would need to be done to run e85 in a bug??

-thanks-

Sounds like quite a bit...

From Wikipedia-

E-85 ethanol is used in engines modified to accept higher concentrations of ethanol. Such flexible-fuel vehicles (FFV) are designed to run on any mixture of gasoline or ethanol with up to 85% ethanol by volume. There are a few major differences between FFVs and non-FFVs. One is the elimination of bare magnesium, aluminum, and rubber parts in the fuel system. Another is that fuel pumps must be capable of operating with electrically conductive ethanol instead of non-conducting dielectric gasoline fuel. Fuel injection control systems have a wider range of pulse widths to inject approximately 40% more fuel. Stainless steel fuel lines, sometimes lined with plastic, and stainless steel fuel tanks in place of terne fuel tanks are used. In some cases, FFVs use acid-neutralizing motor oil. For vehicles with fuel-tank mounted fuel pumps, additional differences to prevent arcing, as well as flame arrestors positioned in the tank's fill pipe, are also sometimes used. (ethanol is far less combustible than gasoline especially when cold and these devices should not be needed)

Doesn't exactly sound feasible to me. I've certainly been wrong before though!

People modify their cars to take advantage of the higher octane rating of E85. Superchargers, turbos and/or lots of compression. But the downside is takes more volume to run it. So the cost savings in the purchase of the fuel gets eaten up by the amount you use.

I think it cost more per MPG than normal gas, But I do think, like most alcohol type fuels it runs cooler...? And would work well with an aircooled motor.
